In my final year of college, I got the best piece of advice from one of my professors, and it has changed the way write.
Never let anyone tell you that you are a bad writer.
It was about two weeks into the semester, and it was for a writing class, so the professor had a chance to see a little bit of our work. This statement was not just to me, but to the entire class. Personally, I think that made it even better. This was not just some compliment on one of our papers, but advice to live by.
Being students, we have pretty much been writing since middle school. Starting from book reports all the way up to research papers, and whether it was two or 20 pages of writing, we have been getting feedback. As we advance further in our studies, the requirements have grown. At first it started off as just making sure the grammar was correct and by the end of your college career it turns in to something along the lines of coming up with a sound thesis and proving it using at least twelve academic sources and a minimum of 25 pages. Sound familiar? So, our writing has advanced, but maybe somewhere along the way we have gotten some bad reviews from teachers and it has discouraged us in our writing. For those of you who like to write, but maybe don’t because you don’t think you are the best at it, this advice is for you!
Never let anyone tell you that you are a bad writer.
Shonda Rhimes, creator of "Greys Anatomy" and "Scandal" is coming out with a writing class, and in her video to promote it she says, “Either you are a writer, or you are not. If you are a writer, then go write!” She says that even if you only have 10 minutes, if writing is what you love to do, and then you should do it. Given that this is a woman who has won over 15 awards for her multiple TV drama series, she seems like the expert. So when you start doubting yourself, or start convincing yourself that you are about to fail this paper, do not fret! Get up and walk away for 10 minutes, clear your mind, and then come back and look at it with fresh eyes. Writers block is also 100 percent a thing, so do not get down on yourself if you cannot think about things to write about. Think about something you are passionate about or interested in, and go from there!
So even if you have gotten some bad grades from some of your teachers along the way, or if you did not place in the essay-writing contest you participated in during high school, do not let that discourage you! There is always room for improvement and practice does make perfect. It may take some time for you to find your style, but do not let anyone tell you that you are a bad writer. There are tons of ways to practice and improve your writing like blogs, websites, or even poetry. Write with confidence, do what you love, and everything will fall into place.
