As the semester winds down, we all start looking for ways to get our mind off of the monstrous number of essays and study guides we have to do. I know I personally feel like I have been smashed in the face with power and hatred of a million geese, and I am on the verge of an existential crisis. But in order to stop my self from going over the edge, I know I need to allow myself a break from studying. Even if it's for only 10 minutes, I need a chance to take a non-musical or educational breath to allow pure thoughts and brilliance to shine through. Yes, we all love BuzzFeed Animal videos and looking through DJ Khaled's Snapchat as a distraction. But this man's YouTube videos are pure gold. Berleezy, an English major from CSUF has taken the time to do what we have all wanted to do — question everything about our favorite childhood cartoons in a comedic fashion. He has exposed the likes of "Dora," "The Magic School Bus" and even "Rugrats." His videos are the funniest thing on the Internet right now, and I highly suggest you go out and watch them.
This is a still from one of my personal favorites, "Edd Edd and Eddy: Exposed." I now personally use the following commentary in my everyday vernacular, even toward those with normal tongues.
"Pauuusee. What. Is. That? You ever heard of Colgate, b---h? Gol-ly, how is your tongue so perfectly green like that? To the tonsils. What have you been doin?! Eatin' a--. Eatin' Shrek a--. This boy got tricks with it. Don't look cool."
At this point I was in tears from laughter. The fluctuation in his voice that he uses to roast him was out of this world. I cant even begin to describe how he did it; y'all have to watch the video to see what I'm talking about. He was so passionate about it. And I've always wondered this myself about this; I now know I am not alone in the questioning of my childhood cartoons (seriously, Cartoon Network how you goin' play us like this? And why do his fingers look like Blow Pops? Childish.). See, the roast gets to you. Being able to relate to colloquial speech is hysterical. You watch these videos and think "same, though." In a weird, turned around way, this helps you clear your mind, since it puts you at peace knowing someone feels the same way about something so minuscule; therefore, helping you with your studying. A perfectly viable defense mechanism to help you stop studying for a second. How perfect. Watch these videos and get an A on that. Plus, he's loud and super passionate about these insults. We can relate and scream as well. Pauuuuseee.
And as a person, Berleezy is cool as heck. I followed him on Twitter, and he interacts with his fans a lot, which is always cool. The "host with the roast" lets his fans take a poll on Twitter and vote for the next video. He's actually a real person and a real college student like you and me, just maybe a little more hilarious (though i can be a real hoot sometimes. There's a reason why I'm known as the plus-sized princess with jokes. Run my fade, one hunnid.) I also added him on Snapchat (and you should too @berlinedmond) and messaged him one day just to see if he'd reply, and he did! A YouTuber with 234,826 subscribers and 9,581,840 views messaged me back and had a conversation with me! He's real. He's a real college student trying to be a comedian, and that's respectable. He's come up all on his own, he is genuinely funny.
My favorite part about his videos is when he tries to seduce the attractive females of the cartoons. The music will drop to John Coltrane's "In a Sentimental Mood," and he'll go on about these animated females (check out Mrs. Proud... daaaaayum.") First off, hats off, round of applause, throw it in a circle, preach, hallelujah, thank you based god respect this man. As a saxophone player and jazz cat, I dig this harder than Shia LaBeouf in "Holes." Not only is he appealing to the average joe, but we pretentious musicians are able to have a genuine laugh over some Coltrane. He is looking out for us. I got a genuine laugh from the music he used. Everyone knows that in a sentimental mood, this is the giddy up jam (had to make that reference as euphoric and family friendly as possible). Respect this man. He has great taste in music. He must care about his musician fan base. But all jokes and excitement aside, all the more reason to watch him. This is what Coltrane died for.
So, as I procrastinate even more and squeeze in watching another expose episode, please go check out his videos! If you are in need of comic relief, look him up. He is hysterical and real and the type of person who deserves recognition for his talent. Plus, I know you as a reader need a few more insults to have on lock; you never know when a professor or wayward cartoon character wants to try you.
