Tons of misconceptions have been thrown around about only children. For example, people assume we're spoiled, we're lonely, or we don't know how to share, etc. Those are not necessarily true and it causes us to get a bad reputation. You know the saying "people with curly hair want straight hair and people with straight hair want curly hair?" Sometimes those words get substituted with "Only children want siblings, and people with siblings want to be only children." Just like plenty of people love having brothers and sisters, some only children enjoy the life they have. I, for one, love being an only child and I've come up with a list of its perks.
1. You don’t have to share a room
I mean, think of all that extra room for activities. Do you want to have a dance party? Go ahead, you have the extra room.
2. You don't have to share your clothes with anyone
I can barely get my own outfits together without having to worry about a sibling snatching my clothes.
3. You're incredibly independent
Apart from my parents I rely heavily on myself. I have a tendency to be stubborn and sometimes picky so being dependent on myself is my true calling.
4. You're obviously going to be the favorite child
Because who else would they choose.
5. You mature at a younger age
I'm the youngest out of all my cousins, so I was around adults 24/7 growing up. It forced me to mature faster.
6. Your best friend is basically your sibling
I have two best friends and my parents have taken both of them in as their "second children." If I had to pick a sibling it would without a doubt be one of them.
7. Your cousins step in at times to play the brotherly or sisterly role
Pep talks tend to be their specialty.
8. You don't mind being alone
As much as I love hanging out with my friends I really appreciate my alone time.
9. There's no such thing as sibling rivalry when you don't have siblings to rival with
What ever will you do with all that free time? Watch a movie? Read a book? Go shopping?
10. You have a vast imagination
I can't remember a time in my life where I wasn't making up games or stories. When you mix being an only child and growing up on Disney characters your imagination tends to take a turn of its own.
11. You have a fabulously close relationship with your parents
Let's be real, my parents are kind of my BFFs. I go to the movies with them, sometimes more than my friends, and the three of us have a group chat together.
The number of one-child families is slowly on the rise, and it's time we started embracing it all.
