Beloved Starkville

11 obscure pockets of character within our home.

Beloved Starkville
Amanda Tindall

Okay if we are being honest, we are at the point of the year where Starkville is not very beloved. Maybe it's just me, but there's something about an average of 12 minutes of sleep per night that gives me this annual sense of apathy toward everything college-related. But despite the "first week of May" syndrome, I want this article to remind all Starkville residents to take a minute and remember to appreciate the obscure character that our beloved town has. We all know and love Davis Wade and Stromboli's, but the goal of this article is to have an "inside joke" feeling for fellow residents of our beloved town (I mean, simply said: if you don't live in Starkville, you're missing out). So for Starkville residents, the following 11 pictures of the less publicized elements of Starkville should instantly strike up the feelings of happiness, road-rage, hunger, anxiety, nostalgia, or simple familiarity.

1. Arguably the most beautiful sight this world has to offer:

2. You know you about to go HAM on some homework if you are walking this trail:

3. If you haven't enoed (enod?) (does anyone know what the past tense for eno is?) (is eno even a verb?) here, I don't know you:

4. Does anyone know why these are literally the most overwhelming stairs in the universe? (possibly because the only time I see them is when I'm sprinting up them at 7:59 am):

5. Nope, I'm not talking about the knock off Limited Too. I'm talking about the severe damage that all of our cars have experienced from bottoming out in their death trap of a parking lot:

6. Only Juniors and Seniors will remember Mississippi State's glory days when this was actually a road, but don't we all miss the time when it took us less than 5 hours to get across campus?:

7. You don't even go to Mississippi State if you have never had a class in this room:

8. Here is another concept that isn't the visual focus of the picture (sorry Popeye's): the intersection in front of Kroger *cringes:

9. Modern day tax-collectors:

10. There is no such thing as good driving on this road:

11. The most stressful bathroom experience:

Starkville, thank you for the cheese fries, stressful parking lots, and late night study spots. Your tiny pockets of character are what make this town weird, beautiful, and all around, beloved. Keep Starkville strange.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
