Education majors, engineer majors, marketing majors, theatre majors, nursing majors, and nutrition majors... What do they all have in common? They are all working hard.
Every single major in college is difficult, regardless of what you are studying. Yet, one of the worst things college students are guilty of is belittling other students majors. But what is the point of that? Why do we do that? To make ourselves feel better about the fact that we struggle sometimes? Or to make ourselves look like we are working harder to reach our goals?
The truth is, we are all working hard. Yea we're all staying up until 2 a.m. in the library studying for exams. We all have finals, tests, projects, labs, etc. We all need to keep up our scholarships, we are all working really hard to keep our heads above water and our lives together. We are all working towards a degree.
The only difference in majors is that each of our are working towards something that we are passionate about. Education majors enjoy teaching and working with students, so their goal is to become the best teacher possible, so they are working extra hard to perfect their ability to make lesson plans. Engineers enjoy planning and seeing how things work, their goals might be to build buildings or come up with a new software for communication with those who don't have access to electricity, so they are working extra hard learning how to draw up plans and learn coding. We are all working hard to attain a goal, so why are we discouraging them?
Honestly, we should be supporting each other, because if you really think about it, one day, we are all going to need each other. In the next ten years, most college students will get their degrees and buy a house, or get an apartment, or buy a car. We can thank engineers for making that possible. In the next year years, we'll probably all catch a cold or the flu, and we'll have to go to the doctors office and be treated, we can thank nurses and doctors for that. Then, we might have kids, and those kids will need to learn how to read, write, and spell, we can thank education majors for that.
Every person, from every major, plays a different role in making life just a little bit easier for you later on. So, the next time you think of telling someone how "easy" their major is ... think again. Instead of belittling them, support and encourage them, because, we are all working hard to attain our goals and make each others lives easier for one another later on down the road.
