Let me start by saying that not all babies are cute, especially when they are brand new. For some reason, parents think that their child, no matter how discolored and odd looking, is the most beautiful child they have ever seen. Parents stare at their baby to realize how completely dependent a child must be. There will never be another stage in a person’s life when they will be more vulnerable because at no other time will they need such careful attention. Babies trust like no other because they have no alternative. If they fall, you catch them. If they cry, you hold them. If they are hungry, you feed them. Faith comes in right there.
As a baby, you’ve never been hurt, so faith in people isn’t so hard. Time passes, and you’re older now. Faith in people is harder because, in kindergarten, someone didn’t pick you to be on their kickball team. In sixth grade, you weren’t invited to that sleepover. In 10th grade, your friends didn’t act like friends. People hurt you and at times, you felt betrayed by God. You’ll ask what you did to deserve this pain. Death happens to undeserving families, and terrorist attacks are happening left and right. You can vote now, but no one really seems to have the right idea. School is stressful, and your teacher does not understand that you actually did have the stomach virus even if you don’t have a doctor’s note. Faith is tricky, but trust anyway. Trust that God closes doors so new doors open.
Human beings are, by nature, scared of being hurt. Walls are put up to prevent future heartbreak, but that can get pretty lonely. These walls aren't just blocking out people, they are blocking out the Lord. People may disappoint, but God will always be in your corner.
So here is my point: Nothing truly amazing happens easily. Faith is difficult at times, but don’t succumb to the pressure. Curveballs like tragedies and heartbreak lead you to believe that God isn’t fair, but don’t buy that. We are God’s babies. Have the kind of faith and trust in Him as we had in our parents before we were old enough to question it. In His eyes, we are beautiful. When we hurt, He holds us in the palm of His hand. When we fall, He raises us higher. When we are hungry, He offers us His body. Maybe now would be a good time to start trusting Him more and trusting ourselves less.
