Who Says Being Weird Is A Bad Thing?

Taking a closer look at the oddities of Ben Carril.

Who Says Being Weird Is A Bad Thing?
Chelsie Bartley

As I lay in my 82-degree dorm room at 2:06 a.m. not being able to sleep after long-boarding for about two hours, my mind stays restless deciding what is on my heart to tell you wonderful people. Well, I think I came to my conclusion.

In my life, I have always seen myself as someone who enjoys a lot of things that are quite random. It doesn’t seem very normal for all the activities I want to be involved in, or that I am particularly skilled at. From how I have compared myself to another person, I see Ben Carril as an undecided child in a candy store: he just keeps running around and trying all the different candies figuring out if he hates it or loves it instead of just going with the same candies every time. There is a lot of indecisiveness every day of my life and I love it! I let myself try new things, say whatever is going through my head (even if it is completely ridiculous), and have such a moment-by-moment mentality on life that I think it is correct to see me as a truly weird person.

So, I am going to try my best to prove why you can call me “weird” and be confident that instead of insulting me, you will be identifying me as my true personality.

1. I would rather watch a professional bowling tournament than an American Football Game.

Watching a few professional bowlers roll their bowling balls down the same two lanes is much better than viewing giant sweaty guys sit on each other ... but some might say I am in a lose-lose situation.

2. I feel just as comfortable in a band room as I do on a soccer field.

Who said that band nerds have to be on a leash? Or that jocks can’t be dorky? I bet Jesus likes both.

3. Green Day is my favorite band … Yeah, Green Day is my…favorite band.

Yes, I do enjoy a band that not only wears full makeup, but also forms all their songs on the same five guitar chords. Consistency is key …

4. My chronological age is 19, but my heart dances to the beat of '70s and '80s music.

Sorry new age rap, hip-hop and these new country artist trying to shove rapping into their acoustic guitars, but you make my legs want to crawl in a time portal back to Michael Jackson’s swagger.

5. My go-to greeting is the Forrest Gump wave.

Maybe it was built in to my DNA from watching his story over 30 times, maybe not. Either way, it is something that makes me myself.

6. I named my dog Bertha.

You look cute the second people see you; but you get an upgrade to cute and dumb after I tell them your name. Sorry, baby girl.

7. I can quote the movies "Hot Rod," "Step Brothers" and "Anchorman."

"You ate the whole wheel of cheese? And you pooped in the refrigerator? Actually ... I'm not even mad; that's amazing"—Ron Burgundy.

8. Nuns scare me.

This fact of me has nothing to do against Catholicism … only nuns.

9. My dream pet I need to have is a tea cup pig.

If this doesn’t make your heart smile ... then you probably need Jesus.

10. At least once a day I speak as a fictional character named Sarah who is portrayed in Jimmy Fallon's "EW!" skits on The Tonight Show.

My number one rule is to always be yourself ... except if you’re trying to be a hormone-filled teen girl with braces who has an online show in her parent’s basement.

12. My willingness to do insane and embarrassing things literally has no end.

Double or triple dog dare me? You won’t even be able to say, “double-dog” before the deed is done.

11. Often my mouth starts running before my brain says, "Wait, no this is a horrible idea."

I may or may not have accidentally, but lovingly, called my girlfriend a cow (according to the pattern of white and black spots on her sweater), and possibly compared my mom’s post-spray-tan skin tone to an Oompa-Loompa from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory.

So, the question is: weird or not? It’s up to your judgment now!

You stay classy, online readers.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
