Mass media promotes booze, drugs and especially sex. The idea of sex is taken lightly compared to past years. Before if you were to have sex before marriage you would be seen as dirty and tarnished. Now people think that if you haven’t had sex by 18 that something is wrong with you. Do boys not like you? Are you afraid? Are you clean down there? These ridiculous questions are asked to all virgins around the world. Being a virgin is seen as more wrong than having sex. This is a total misconception. I am not saying that those who have sex are necessarily sluts, but that does not make those who don’t have sex prudes. As a society we give a bad name to virgins. We tell them that it is not okay to not be having sex. We make them feel less of themselves. We put them down for the choice that they have made because it is the “wrong” choice. Instead of making them feel bad about themselves we should be supporting them.
Being a virgin especially in college is difficult. All you hear about is who is laying everyone else. Guaranteed the person who lives right next you is banging one of your friends. Sex is merely a game that people play. They compare with their friends who has slept with the most and hottest people of the opposite sex. Sex is not about love anymore, its about how many people you can screw in a week.
The worst is when everyone starts to find out you are a virgin. Us virgins are a dying breed and being one is rare. Once everyone finds out, you are fair game to all the boys. The idea of having sex with a virgin and taking her “v card” is something that attracts boys. When boys get one sniff of a virgin they start chasing them around like a bunch of dogs.
Sex is something that shouldn’t feel pressured. You will know when it is the right time and the right person, at least from what I have been told. Don’t let anyone pressure you into sex if you’re not ready. There is nothing embarrassing about being a virgin. It saves you money and trips to the OBGYN to see if you have any diseases.
I am a virgin and I am not ashamed of this. When I choose to have sex it will be on my terms and not because society tells me too.
