Spending some time back in your hometown during your summer break from college is relaxing. You get the luxury of returning to the familiarity of home, catching up with old friends, and meeting with family members on a more regular basis. One way to make the most of your short time back home is playing tourist in the town that you may think that you know so well. The same points of interest and attractions that you have grown up around may seem mundane; however, when you visit these places you develop a greater sense of appreciation for just how fun your city can be.

Here are 12 reasons why being a tourist in your hometown needs to be on your summer bucket list.

1. You are supporting the local economy.

Putting your money into the small businesses and attractions that are unique to your area assists in keeping the business aspect of the community alive and thriving.

2. You learn about the history of your hometown.

You may be surprised when you are made aware of the fun facts regarding the city's upbringing.

3. You don't have to travel far to have fun.

4. You discover things that you have never noticed before.

That cute coffee shop has been here for how long!? How have I never seen this before?

5. Your Instagram becomes a free form of advertisement for the region.

Gotta keep your followers updated on all your summer adventures, right?

6. You can relive childhood memories.

Going to the local waterpark is just as fun now as it was when you were seven.

7. Your friends can easily accompany you on these adventures.

When you play tourist in your hometown, your friends are only a few minutes away so it can be simple to coordinate schedules since you do not have to plan on traveling far away.

8. You will meet new people.

By exploring the hidden gems of your community, you will also meet brand new people and potentially make new friends.

9. You are able to recommend places for other people to go.

And you can tell them exactly how to get there.

10. You make incredible memories.

Then every time you pass the location in which you spent that time, you are reminded of the incredible memory.

11. You can explain to other people just how unique your hometown is.

After attaining these "tourist" experiences firsthand, you can better explain what it is that makes the town that you are from so special.

12. You develop a greater sense of appreciation for the city you grew up in.
