“We all have to make that important decision — our major.”
Here I am into my third year of college eating a granola bar, and I am thinking, “I am actually happy that college is looking up.” College is never a place where one can truly wear the smiley emoji 24/7. It seems impossible. In all honesty, college is no walk in the park. It is even more stressful when you bounce back and forth between majors. I want to tell you that it is OK to be undeclared and to try out different majors!
Entering college, I had set goals on what I wanted to do in life. Well you see, things did not go as they appeared in my head. I bounced back and forth between majors. I went from education to chemistry to international studies. I eventually went back to square one: education. My ultimate goal at first was to become a doctor. As a doctor, my goal was to make a difference in the lives of people. I wanted to make my parents and others proud. In my head, there was this necessity to become this high-status person everyone looks up to. Did you notice that this dream of mine did not take into consideration my needs or desires, but instead what others wanted me to do? You feel pressure from many sources such as families, friends, etc. to pick a good major. We pick our majors based on things that do not seem to parallel own needs.
When the sun checks out for the day, it ultimately comes down to YOU! You are the one who is receiving that diploma four to five years from now. Go for your passion. Do not let anyone else dictate what you should do for a living. It all takes a toll on a person. I have felt emotionally and physically sick. You have felt it or seen your friends suffer. It is not a pleasant thing to feel or see.
Do not be indecisive, like I was, follow your passion. Deep down inside, I knew education was the route to go, personally. The reason I am going into education is not for the money, but instead, to infuse my future students with culture and opening their perspective of the world to a whole new level. As a French teacher, I will show them the portal to success.
I am happy with the decision on becoming a teacher. I feel that I have (more) control of my life, finally. Sure, I may be in school longer, but it will be totally worth it in the end! Just writing this article really sparks my excitement. It is a sure sign of reassurances that I picked the right major. Are you feeling the same spark about your major?
I can make people proud and be looked up to. Just because you and I will not be doctors does not mean we can’t make a difference in our communities. Teachers can make much of a difference as any other person in our communities.
Just remember, follow your passion. Yes, your own, but only yours.
