The Food and Beverage Industry can be an interesting place. It is one of the areas I promised myself I would never work in, but I ended up giving it a go as a server this past summer. It was definitely a different atmosphere, and I have learned that no other jobs will experience such situations.
1. When you're running all over the place and sweating, and then have to walk into the kitchen
I'm just going to die of a heat stroke, no big deal.
2. When your lunch crowd finishes late, and you're on a time crunch setting up for dinner
Especially if you're using a formal place setting. It takes time to be pretty.
3. When you receive a large tip from the table that you expected to not tip you
Nothing is better than a good surprise.
4. When you are trying to ring in a large order in two minutes or less since you have several other tables to attend to
You wish everyone would understand how long it takes to enter a very specific order.
5. When your cash tip falls out of your pocket
Worst. Day. Ever.
6. When you serve someone who gave you a huge tip last time
I'm not sucking up, I swear.
7. When you finally get a break and have just a few minutes to scarf down your meal
The stomachache is so worth it.
8. When you want to ask how the meal is, but your table is in a deep conversation
There's no way to not make this awkward.
9. When you have to work out so you can lift the heavy glassware
A lot of upper body strength is needed to serve. I was definitely one of the weakest (if not the weakest) person there. I learned how difficult it is, and I salute everyone who is a server.
