Being a server in college is no easy job. However, being a server bestows you with a set of skills that is not only useful on the job, but can also help in various areas of your life, such as being a college student
- You become an expert at multitasking. When you have to remember what a table ordered to drink while holding a tray of food, all while remembering that table number 12 wants an extra ketchup, you become pretty good at mulitasking. The whole "you can’t text in class and take in the information" doesn’t really pertain to us waiters.
- You’re an Olympic speed walker. Having to walk around all day or night at work, let alone having to check in with two tables and run to the back of the kitchen to make sure the cooks got your order right, makes your legs fairly strong. Have to get to a building all the way across campus in only five minutes? We’ll get there in two.
- Making friends in class and/or in a group project is no biggie. Everyone knows that when you’re in college and you have to do a group project with strangers, it’s basically torture. However, as a server, your job is literally to talk to strangers. Whether you’re naturally friendly or not (which you kind of have to be to serve), it makes it easy to at least put up a believable front.
- We have no problem with all-nighters. Don’t get me wrong, all-nighters are never ideal or fun, but if need be it’s something we can handle. Having to close down dining on a Wednesday night when you have a test the next morning at 9 isn’t something that’s out of the ordinary for servers. Servers typically have to work long hours in order to make decent money, so long hours and late nights tend to not phase us.
- We're pretty decent at handling stress. Being a server is a stressful job to say the least, and being a college student is an even more stressful job. Being a server, you find yourself in the weeds from time to time. You may have more tables than you can handle and you’re being sat as soon as you’re putting in an order for a table of 12. The same happens while in school. An assignment gets added to our endless list of things to do, all while having to study for a huge test coming up. However, we servers know how to keep a cool exterior, even if we're having a mini heart attack inside.
- We’re pretty good at reading people. Even though this trait doesn’t deal directly with school and college, it does help in some matters. Servers can usually pick up on the kind of person you are as soon as we ask for your drink order. A lot of it has to do with us trying to figure out if you’re a good tipper or not (I know, it’s kind of judging). However, we are also able to easily tell if our coworker is in the weeds or stressed out. When it comes to school we can usually tell if the professor is going to be interesting and/or good within the first class, kind of like when we ask for your drink. It also helps when it comes to making friends in your classes and who you choose to surround yourself with.
