Ever feel as though there is a disconnection between yourself and your millennial counterparts? Do the latest developments in popular culture, technology, and mainstream trends fail to truly excite you? If so, you may be an “old soul” living in a contemporary generation.
Defined as being thoughtful, intuitive, sensitive, and empathetic, the term “old soul” describes individuals who feel much older than their chronological age. Old souls are often contemplative and have a strong desire for personal growth as well as solitude.
They overlook everything trendy for all that is timeless, and in doing so they sense a strong separation between themselves and others in their generation.
In a generation marked by social media trends, transparency, and an emphasis on all things digital and technological, we are especially isolated company. I am consistently reminded of these disparities when noticing the fervent attachment my peers often display towards their phones, iPads, and other devices.
Our generation is one of great technological advancement, with social media providing innovative methods to connect with others in ways never thought possible. Yet, for a simplistic old soul, social media only acts as a hollow tool that masks the true fundamental need for intimate, face-to-face interaction.
This disconnect with tech savvy peers is not our only prominent characteristic. We often ignore the latest fashion trends and pop culture gossip while our nights are spent listening to music from decades ago or getting lost in a good book.
Extravagant parties are not for us; we’d much rather enjoy an intimate gathering with close friends.
While you may feel isolated from peers, remember that you are never alone. In being mindful and conscientious, we possess a distinctive awareness of ourselves that is nothing short of inspiring.
We are analytical, private, supportive, and compassionate. We seek to obtain peace and fulfillment from within ourselves beyond our materialistic surroundings, and in doing so we gain a type of wisdom that is truly empowering to ourselves and those around us.
In a fast-paced world that emphasizes wealth and possession over all else, never forget who you are and how much more beautiful and thought-provoking the world is from having you in it.
