Babies are crazy. Toddlers are crazy. Kids are crazy, but.. they are also absolutely amazing. I, myself, can not imagine having kids for at least another decade, but being an aunt is the best “sort-of” mother a person can be.
Personally, I have 2 nephews, who refer to me as “aunt lulu,” and I wouldn't mind if they called me that until I am 50, but these two boys are my world. They are my best friends. They cry when I cry, and they laugh when I laugh. Although, they might just be the sassiest people I know, I adore them and will stand behind them no matter what they decide. I will always keep their secrets and my promises, and I will always give them candy before dinner. ;) I’ll let them stay up past bedtime and watch as much TV as they please. Because that is what an aunt can do. You can spoil the heck out of them. You can nurture and love them unconditionally and be their right hand… Just with no rules.
No one, and I mean no one, will get onto you for giving your nephew/niece that extra cookie. You’re never obligated to discipline them. You simple just trust in the fact that they love you enough to respect you. You do not have to deal with the nasty parts. Although you grow on the fact that baby poop isn't completely revolting, you never have to change a dirty diaper. That is not a part of the aunt rule book. As soon as that diaper reaches full, you hand the kid back over to their parents. You get to be a kid again. No one will judge you for getting so emotionally involved in playing cars or trucks. Nor do they judge you for running around the house playing swords or tag. You get to experience life in the eyes of a kid again. But the best part of being an aunt, you have a best friend until the day you die. Your little best friend will always want to stay the night with you, and will always want a big hug and squeeze. They will always listen to your “grownup problems”, even though they have no clue how to understand them. You will always have someone to have fun with no matter how old, either of you get.
