Stubblefield’s, a.k.a. "Mike's," is the ultimate weekend getaway that is infamous for ending unruly nights with a bang. Between the packed upstairs, rowdy basement and wild cages, we can’t deny we don't have a story or two coming out of that place. Turning 21 was detrimental to my academics and my bank account (as most could agree). With Stubby Tuesday, Wing Wednesday, and the mere existence of Thursday, Friday and Saturday, there is never a sense of regret when it comes to getting that stamp on the wrist. With all the people you have ever met in one room, the atmosphere could not be any more intense. A drink in one hand and your bestie in the other, the night is filled with nothing but potential. I recently had the privilege to sit down with the general manager of Stubblefield's, and your girl's favorite DJ, DJ Goldfinger:
What is the craziest thing you have ever seen?
G: It was one Mom’s weekend. I can’t even talk about it. Another though is when we had a Jello wrestling pit downstairs. Everyone had negative preconceived notions about how sexist it was. At the end, guys and girls were both in there and had even made teams.
How long have you been working here?
G: Since the beginning. This year makes it 10 years.
What is your favorite part about working at Mikes?
G: It’s exciting. I wanted it to be like the show “Cheers” from Nick at Nite. It was the only show I understood when I was younger. It was ten people at a bar and everyone knew each other's names. I want people to come into Stubblefield’s and know your name. There is always someone here, and to know that you are never alone and to feel that you are apart of something is what I want. Stubblefield’s is open for everyone. If a 50-year-old alumni came in to Jello wrestle, we can make that happen.
What drives your passion for Stubblefield's?
G: What I am doing here is more than just in this place. It is beyond. It spreads past Pullman. Now I get to hear how Stubblefield’s is compared to a bar in Brooklyn from an alumni, and someone came in the other day and said how remix sauce should be smothered on a turkey, not just our wings. I am crazy proud of this building and the vibe within it. Like dealing with people’s 21st and their first bar experience. Pullman brings it. People ask me what my, “real name is,” or, “where do I live,” or, “what my age is," but only DJ Goldfinger matters, and what he provides at Stubblefield’s. He’s there and gone. Those other details are just a distraction. I have always wanted to be #1 on someone’s list, and by creating this I feel I’ve done that. At Stubblefield’s, we have a real world staff with all kinds of personalities to create a unique and true dynamic. When I leave at the end of the day I want to salute the building with the gold rims spinning.
Stubblefield's has become more than just a place to go on Friday night. It's a place where everyone feels at home, get to see all their friends, meet new people, and be themselves without fear of judgement.
