Behind the Grind with Upcoming Artist: VICKY G

Singer/songwriter Vicky G hails from the suburbs of Long Island, New York, where her passion for music and writing first arose. She embodies that true New York hustle and grind mentality and is fighting to claim a spot at the top. With her hard work and dedication to make it in the music industry, Vicky G is adamant about creating meaningful and dope music and overall staying true to herself and her craft. As she continues to grow as an artist Vicky G will continue to impact her fans/listeners with her music and talent and continue making strides towards being one of the greatest out!

When did you realize that making music was your passion?

I realized that around the age of 18, because before that I was involved with school, chorus, church, choir and I was doing more of that instead of making my own original music or creating anything of my own.

What are your thoughts on the music industry?

I feel like it's more of the popular crew against the non-popular crew, and as far as rap goes it's all over the place and so many social media stars are becoming famous just because they have a lot of followers but it distracts from the people who really do have talent that may not be as recognized.

Who influenced your style and the way you write your music?

As far as style wise, I would say, Aaliyah and as far as writing, I would say Chris Brown because I love the way he writes and his foreplay on words is amazing.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

I'm definitely still finding myself as an artist, but right now I would say I'm stuck between old school and mixing it with the new school, but I want to create my own kind of music. I'm the kind of artist that thinks above and beyond and out-of-the-box and sometimes that's not good because people aren't used to hearing things like that.

How did you meet Shay Marzelli and how did that collaboration come about?

It's pretty funny because I actually met him through a mutual friend of ours named, Guyah, and Guyah was already managing Shay at the time. We all met the same day personally, because we all knew of each other and spoke to each other but we haven't officially met one another until that day. As far as the song "The Greed" that Shay and I collaborated on that happened during one of our trips to Miami. We worked with a couple writers and producers out there , and while the writers and I were going back and forth on the song, Shay just popped out of nowhere like, "Yo, I just started writing just listen to it", and he didn't ask for a spot on the song or nothing and when I listened to it I was like, "you have to be on this song", and that's how the collaboration came about.

How do you differ from other artist?

I see a lot of artist trying to be someone else in their music and not sticking to being them, and I can say that I'm different in that way, even when working with writers if I hear something or a simple verse that doesn't represent who I am I would let them know that I don't approve and I refuse to sing that line or verse or whatever it is they want me to sing. Some artist I see go in the totally opposite direction and just produce music that isn't true to them in my opinion and would do anything possible to "get on".

How has Long Island impacted your music?

I feel like me being in Long Island gives me a bit of an edge, like that New York hustle, that grind, that gritty feel. But I also have the suburb, prissy all mixed in at once.

In what ways has your music changed since two years ago?

It has changed a lot, thank goodness! My songs two years ago would be like ABC choppy type of writing, and now I'm really getting into myself and producing better melodies and using a lot of metaphors in my writing. I'm big on word-on-word play and I've been using it a lot nowadays.

What's some advice that you would like to tell our readers?

Never give up and network your butt off no matter what anybody says! Definitely be a people-person and be open, don't be so timid and close-minded to advice because constructive criticism is the best type of criticism.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
