A Beginner's Guide To EDM

Not all EDM sounds the same.

Going to a school in Western New York, you really get a sense of the type of music people listen to. I am from Northern New Jersey, right by Manhattan, and back home, I honestly never heard any of my friends listening to country. When I came here, I never realized how big country music was. When people come up to me in the library while I am studying, they sometimes ask, "How can you study to that party music?" or "All EDM sounds the same, don't you think?" In my honest opinion, though EDM is often described as (and is usually stereotyped as) party music, there are a lot of genres and different sounds of EDM. It is like a bag of Skittles. They are all called Skittles, and they all look the same - round, shiny, and colorful - until you taste them individually and take the time to get to know them individually, you don't get the sense of appreciation you have for every little single morsel. Here's a list of artists and some songs that I not only like, but hopefully will finally put an end to this "it all sounds the same" nonsense. It might just get you curious enough to start exploring EDM for yourself.

1. Music To Chill To

Some perfect chill music to relax to while you are winding down from a day, deep house is probably the best way to go about it! Some deep house artists include Amtrac and Tchami.

2. Perfect Beach Day/Outdoors Day

When you're looking for music to listen to when doing an outdoor activity like a bonfire at the beach or watching the stars under the night sky in the summer, tropical house is your best friend. Some tropical house artists include Kygo and Matoma.

3. To Make You Feel Invincible

Some days you just want to feel uplifted and be ready to take on any challenge. The perfect music for that, in my opinion, is trance. It gets you amped and starts your day on a positive note. Some artists include Above & Beyond and Armin van Buuren.

4. Heartache Causes the Feels

For this section, I did not focus on a specific genre of EDM, but I did want to focus on a couple of songs that a lot of genres of music do touch on - heartbreak. EDM is no exception. Here's a song by Seven Lions that I feel tugs at the heart strings a bit in a unique EDM way.

5. Heartache Causes the Feels...Again

Again, another song choice that I wanted to focus on is probably one we all have heard. Disbanded supergroup Swedish House Mafia's "Don't You Worry Child" is a classic going back a couple years, but man, you seriously have to appreciate John Martin's earnest vocals on this one.

6. For When You're Feeling Angry

When you're feeling angry, you get that weird feeling of wanting to listen to angry sounding music. Dubstep, in my opinion, is a great choice for when you're feeling particularly pissed off. Excision is an awesome dubstep artist.

7. Vibing in a Non-Low Key Way

This particular song by duo Adventure Club is powerful, but also has a certain earnestness to it that I can't put my finger on. Give it a listen below, but tell me it doesn't make you feel some type of way.

8. Vibing in a Low-Key Way

This song really is sort of like category one, but chilling is such an important part of one's day that I wanted to include a whole other section for it. Many people know Kaskade for recent songs nowadays like Atmosphere and Never Sleep Alone (which are party anthems in their own right, but if you don't know them check the songs out here!), but old Kaskade was straight chilling.

9. Bassnectar...Just Bassnectar

Bassnectar. Know him. Love him. This song is just so trippy and dripping with bass.

10. Did I Just Walk Into H&M?

This particular song makes me feel like I walked into a department store at the mall. With the perfect mix of beats and low key vibes, check it out.

11. Whoever Said Disco is Dead?

Disco might be dead, but it has been reborn in the form of Nu-Disco. This remix of famous EDM group Krewella's song "Somewhere to Run" by Lost Kings.

12. Rage to Party

Some of the songs in this list can be used to party, but my personal favorite to get myself amped nowadays is "DERP" by Bassjackers & MAKJ. Knife Party also always gets me hyped.

13. Seven Lions Again

I mentioned Seven Lions earlier, but he's so diverse with his music that I wanted to show you all of his stuff. From melodic dubstep, to dabbling in trance, if one artist could sound this different, I doubt all EDM sounds the same.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
