Earlier this week, reality TV star and businesswoman Kim Kardashian West announced that she and her husband, rapper Kanye West, will be expanding their family by having a third child--via surrogate.
It may not surprise you that this announcement started a thread of comments attacking the couple's decision. I know not everyone is the biggest fan of Kimye, but of all the places to insert your opinion, this is not one of them. Because this is not about selfishness, vanity, or "throwing money at your problems," this is about a couple's informed decision to utilize surrogacy in order to grow their family in the face of complications. This decision is a personal one, one that she and her doctor know will protect her from almost certain complications. It's not about maintaining a certain image or figure, or about just not wanting to carry a child.
If you don't Keep Up With the Kardashians, you may not know that Kim, who has two healthy children, struggled with complications during both pregnancies and both births. She struggled with preeclampisa, a complication of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure and damage to other organ systems, often the liver or kidney. Preeclampsia can be threatening to both the mother and the child.
In the delivery of her first child, Kim also struggled with a condition called placenta accreta, which basically means that her placenta did not come out following the baby, as it should in a healthy birth. In a blog post she wrote about her history with high-risk pregnancies, she wrote "my doctor had to stick his entire arm in me and detach the placenta with his hand, scraping it away from my uterus...how disgusting and painful!"
On their show The Kardashians, Kim discussed her surgery to remove the scar tissue from her uterus, as she hoped to carry and deliver another child and wanted to do all that she could to make this a possibility. She explained that coming from a large and close-knit family herself, she wants to have many children that can all be friends with each other. Her doctor ultimately determined that to carry and deliver another baby herself would be too dangerous, for both Kim and the baby.
Yes, Kim and Kanye are privileged in many ways that the average person is not, especially to be able to afford surrogacy. But while they are not the conventional couple in many ways, in this instance they are just a couple with a simple goal--to have a child--and have the means to do so in a way that will not harm Kim or their future baby.
So before you judge Kim for using a surrogate, just don't.
