A few weeks ago, I was appalled to learn about the mass killing of bees in South Carolina. The killings came as a result of a pest control movement aimed to target mosquitos carrying the Zika virus. Unfortunately, millions of bees died as well, taking a massive number out of the already small (and growing smaller) bee population. It was reported by residents in Dorschter County that it was "like it's been nuked." Here are 6 reasons why you should be appalled over the killings, too.
1. We All Like to Eat
And who doesn't? It is no surprise that 1 in 3 bites of food consumed by humans comes from plants pollinated by bees, making them vitally responsible for the human food supply. Foods like avocados, apples, and cherries are 90% dependent on the pollination process. If the avocado plant isn't pollinated, there are no avocados. What is life without a hearty side of Guac? And did I mention coffee? How will the coffee beans grow?
2. They Make Life Prettier
Bees are responsible for pollinating the flowers that produce the blossoms and floral landscapes that we all love so much. It's been proven that one bee colony is capable of pollinating 300 million flowers every day, making them entirely responsible for our beautiful meadows and all the beautiful food on our kitchen tables.
3. Honey
Honey, while not only delicious has a variety of beauty uses and is healing properties. Honey can speed the healing process of minor skin cuts and burns, AND, honey makes a kick-ass shampoo that is sure to make your hair shine. No bees, no honey. Plus, the honey industry is worth 19 billon dollars. Pretty sweet, huh?
4. They..Dance?
Seriously! Bees communicate with one another by performing "dances" that help their hive mates to find a food source. The better the food source, the more energetic the dance. If that isn't the cutest thing, I'm just not sure what is.
5. You Want to Support Weird Holidays
Who doesn't love "National-Such-And-Such" day? Without bees, the August 22nd honey bee themed holiday wouldn't be celebrated. Many beekeepers have events happening on this holiday, usually with honey samples!
6. The Queen Bee is the Baddest
Move over, Beyonce. The queen bee runs one of the coolest matriarchy's, ever. She lays up to 2,000 eggs per day, and the entire hive revolves around her and her schedule (wouldn't that be nice.) When the queen dies, the hive selects a successor of hers that posesses similar qualities and feed her a mixture of "Royal Jelly" (a mixture of pollen and other natural ingredients).
