There are some things every twenty-something is supposed to know by conventional standards, including: how to do laundry, how to cook a meal that isn't ramen noodles or toaster waffles, how to pay a credit card bill and to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of politics.
Some of these tasks seem more daunting for individuals than others. In my case, I don't think I will ever be able to make anything other than cookies and am fully reliant on online banking so I never have to actually communicate with an actual person. However, I, unlike the majority of college kids, have no issue understanding, debating or following politics, usually to the extreme chagrin of my friends.
So why is having a working understanding of politics so important? It's simple: at this point in your life, law-makers and politicians are making decisions that will directly impact your future. Whether these new policies involve student debt, or foreign policy or taxes, they will all affect you in some way. But wait! There's more....
Can you believe that at this point in your young life you have the power to aid law-makers in their decision process? By voting, you are directly impacting the future of politics and ensuring that your say is heard on important matters. And how can you vote for candidates if you don't know what they stand for or even more importantly, what you stand for. I know I sound like a Public Service Announcement but by registering to vote and participating in each election you are helping make decisions for yourself and future generations.
In addition to being important on the future of legislation, being politically knowledgeable gives you topics to discuss at dinner parties. Imagine how great it will feel to be able to confidently discuss the upcoming elections at your next social event. Trust me, it feels like you're a grown-up and that's crazy and wonderful to experience.
In this day in age, becoming politically aware is easier than ever. With the internet and social media, knowledge is at the click of a button. So I encourage you to do your research, to find your political party, and to find your passion. Becoming politically aware has been the greatest decision I've ever made because only in the United States of America can you decide what happens in your government and that is the most incredible thing I can ever imagine.
