I want to use the power of education to help my future students become doers. Since I was five years old, I have wanted to be an elementary school teacher because I have always enjoyed school. I love how it is a safe environment for students to go everyday and become well versed in many areas of life. It is also a place that helps youth discover themselves; I want to pass along this gift that teachers have given me.
I want to be an inner-city elementary school teacher to empower my students with education and provide them with a stress-free environment. Many students attending inner-city schools have to grow up so fast and lose their innocence to the demons of reality; school should be a safe place for them. For about seven hours a day students have a refuge —a place to escape any problems outside of school— and I want my students to be sheltered from the hardships that adulthood brings while they are in my classroom.
Attaining an education is what helps us achieve our dreams--however, many inner-city children only know the power of poverty and the difficulties of escaping that evil cycle. I want them to know that there is more to life than struggle, and that through learning and an education that they can reach their goals. I believe that teachers at times are impoverished students' last hopes in seeing a future that is not only bright but also filled with possibilities, and I want to be a part of this hope. I want to help these children because I find it extremely unfair that, because they do not have the luxuries that many other children have, they are shielded from the hopes of having something better. Every child – no matter their class, ethnicity, race, etc. – should all share the same opportunities for a great education and should be allowed to see that their dreams are attainable.
Michelangelo once said, “the greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” I disagree: it is not that we set our goals too low; rather, we lack the awareness of our full potential and the means of achieving it. Education is the most essential step towards attaining our dreams and learning what we can do. It helps us grow as individuals and thus helps our community because what we learn will be shared for the greater good of everyone.
I want to teach because education is an essential part in becoming successful. I want to help my students create dreams and accomplish them. I want to show them that the world is their playing field and that anything is possible if they set their mind to it and work hard at everything they do. There is nothing more important than being a teacher, because teachers help mold students into better thinkers and better human beings.
