Pokémon GO, the new augmented reality app created by Niantic Labs and the Pokémon Company, has created a buzz around the world within the first week of its opening (July 6 was the opening day). Honestly, I understand why. As a lifelong fan of Pokémon, being able to become a real Pokémon trainer is a dream come true. Three years ago, if you told me I would have a chance to become a real Pokémon trainer, I would've laughed in your face and told you that could never happen. Fortunately, I would be wrong.
In this article, I will talk about the good, the bad, and what I think should be added In the game. First, I will talk about catching Pokémon. I'll start off with saying that it is not the same as it is on the Nintendo video games. Instead of using one of your current Pokémon to attack the wild Pokémon so you can weaken them enough to catch them, you only have to throw a Poké-ball at it and hope you catch it. While this does make catching Pokémon easier, the downside is that you can't use these wild Pokémon to train your current Pokémon, which makes it harder to evolve.
Second, I will talk about gyms. In the video games, you battle other trainers in gyms to get badges. Here all you have to do is battle certain trainers' Pokémon from a different team (If you're team mystic, you face team valor or team instinct). While this does lead to no badges, it seems to me like a lot more fun. It definitely makes it easier to own a gym. One thing I do hope happens though is that the companies incorporate elite gyms so that trainers can become "Pokémon masters."
Now I will talk about the glitches. While there aren't that many of them, the ones that you do see can be annoying. For example, freezing during a gym battle. Sometimes you will be oh so close to beating another team, and right before you can win, the game freezes. This can be super annoying when you have no gyms in your area, and you are so close to getting one. I really hope they fix this issue within the year. I won't delete the game, but I will be super annoyed.
Next up is the server issues. They seem to be getting better, but when the game first released, the servers kept crashing. This led to hours of downtime, and multiple frustrated fans. If this continues to happen, the Pokémon Company can expect a lot of players to delete the app.
Last but not least, I will talk about what needs to be added. First off, is battling. I would like to be able to battle other trainers in my area, such as my brother, so that I can train my Pokémon better and see where I am when it comes to ability. This was a big part of the video games, and it's what the trading card game is all about, so I really hope this happens.
Also, I would like trading to be a thing. I've heard that it may be coming out, and I hope it does. This would help me get more Pokémon that I don't currently have, and it will let me help others. Also, the company made this game to get people more socially involved, and this would really help that.
Overall, I give this game an 8.2 out of 10. It's really done well in meeting my expectations of what the game is, and I think it has a lot of stuff it can easily build on. To all of you Pokémon trainers out there, happy hunting.
