I am going to state this right from the start: I am in no way saying that boys do not face any sort of issues with anything I talk about in this article or with anything in general, and I am not saying these are all true, but they appear true to my experiences. However, most can agree, or at least girls can probably agree with the fact that we go through a lot with simple things because of how society has become.
Because I am a girl, I am expected to not be as strong as a man would be, which okay it is realistic, however, just because I do not have as much "muscle" as a man, does not mean I am not capable of defending myself. I feel as if some people assume that just because someone does not appear strong in one aspect means that they are not strong at all.
Because I am a girl, I go through a series of cautions before I leave the house, whether its for a party or a simple, "I'm going out for a drive with a few friends". We are basically seen as an "easy target" or it at least seems that way being that it has come to the point where walking home alone at night is no longer a thing that happens and even when it's broad daylight, I call a friend or someone when I have to walk somewhere alone.
Carrying around an alarm to scare someone off or maize is now something seemed to be "normal" just to be safe where I go. Going to the bath room results in waiting for your friend you went to the party with to go with you and stand in front of the door until you finished. Being at parties could consist in standing with your cup directly in front of you and even possibly with your hand over your drink just to help try preventing someone slipping you something.
Because I am a girl, I grew up in a school system where they teach you that if your shoulders show, boys will be distracted. If your shorts are not finger tip length, than they are too short. And for the girls with long legs like me, well then that meant if the shorts were not touching your knees then they are way to short.
Because I am a girl, wearing anything somewhat revealing, means that I am asking for it. Showing leg, means I am asking for it. Showing some stomach, means I am asking for it. Even wearing shorts and a t-shirt nowadays seems to say I am asking for it.
Because I am a girl, I am not allowed to be in a mood without being told "oh you are on your period". To me, that statement alone says that my mood at that current point is not to be taken seriously because its my TOM and not really me talking.
Because I am a girl, I am being accused.
Because I am a girl, I need to be extra cautious.
Because I am a girl, I learned how to be strong mentally.
Because being female causes a lot of serious and life changing setbacks in other places around the world.
