16 Beautiful And Rare Words
Kerri Caldwell

About a month ago I came across the word hiraeth. The word itself was unique, but the definition was life-changing:

A homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past and the departed.

Some might wonder how others can get so much out of one, little word, and I feel sorry for them. I find it magical that a number of letters put together hold so much power. It's even more special when the words are rare, unheard of, or even lost. Since coming across hiraeth, I went on a search to find other words that have been forgotten but have meanings that are still incredibly relevant.

Here are my favorites:

1. Erlebnisse (n.) the experiences, positive or negative, that we feel most deeply, and through which we truly live; not mere experiences, but Experiences

This definition is one of my favorites. The Experience defined is just as rare as the word.

2. Orphic (adj.) mysterious and entrancing; beyond ordinary understanding

3. Nepenthe (n.) something that makes you forget grief or suffering

5. Mizpah (n.) the deep emotional bond between people, especially those separated by distance or death

Another word I connect with on many levels, and one that is more relevant to the human race than most people probably realize.

6. Saudade (n.) a nostalgic longing to be near again to something

7. Alpas (v.) to become free, to break loose

8. Kairos (n.) the perfect, delicate, crucial moment; the fleeting rightness of time and place that creates the opportune atmosphere for action, words, or movement

The meaning of this word, to me, is similar to that of erlebnisse; to experience this "fleeting rightness of time" is as unheard of the word itself.

9. Metanoia (n.) the journey of changing one’s mind, heart, self, or way of life

10. Oenomel (n.) something combining strength with sweetness

11. Trouvaille (n.) something lovely discovered by chance

12. Orenda (n.) a mystical force present in all people that empowers them to affect the world or to effect changes in their own lives

13. Yugen (n.) a profound awareness of the universe that triggers a deep emotional response

14. Numinous (adj.) describing an experience that makes you fearful yet fascinated, awed yet attracted-the powerful, personal feeling of being overwhelmed and inspired

15. Woolgathering (n.) indulgence in idle daydreaming

16. Sehnsucht (n.) a yearning for a far, familiar, non-earthly land one can identify as one’s home

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
