Why be a writer for the Odyssey in college? Well the answer is simpler than you think.
College is a stressful environment. Some people turn to eating the stress others turn to working out. It's a different ballpark than when we were in high school. At least in high school we had creative ways to make school and learning still fun. In college, those chances appear less and less depending on the major and the professor.
When I accidentally signed up to write for the Odyssey, (yes it was a complete accident that I landed this totally awesome 'job'), I wasn't really sure what I had gotten myself into. Another weekly commitment was all I saw it as at first but now I see it as a way to breathe. It is my outlet, my color in the grey-scale world.
Writing an article needs to be seen as a creative output. A way to make your week mean more than assignments and due dates. I like to think of it as my time to write about anything versus writing about things my professors want to read. I was just telling my team lead that if you have enough time to watch that hour long episode on Netflix you have time to write an article.
Some people see this task, writing an article, as a task but instead they need to see it as an outlet. A chance to write something of their own choice, a chance not to have a rubric be your guide line, and the best thing....a chance to not worry about a grade!
Do you love writing, getting your thoughts out there, or just making people laugh? Then writing for the Odyssey is for you. You should join our team if you go here at Lander, we are always looking for new members! If you go to another school you should check with them to see if they have a local team. It is an amazing way to leave your mark on the world, so let your voice be heard!
