I worked as a cashier for my first job, and now, I currently work in the fundraising center at my school. Something I have realized from my job is that no matter how bad my day is, I will never be rude to customer service employees again.
We have all been there, whether you have a bad day or maybe you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed. You know that you have been a little cold to someone before. This has happened when I was working at a local restaurant. I always tried being nice to our customers, and if it was slow I would make small talk with them. There were people who would come in and be extremely rude and complain to me about something that happened to them, and I would be as civil as possible back. I understand that there may be a problem with the food or they are not pleased, but that was never my fault. I never knew why I was the one they would get upset with, when I had nothing to do with it. Sometimes it even put a damper on my day. Another thing, it bothers me when people do not tip the waitress or waiter because the kitchen messed up. It isn't the wait staff's fault that the food was cold.
I now work as a fundraiser. I call people from my college and ask for donations for projects on campus. I was trained to give the caller a sense of who I was. I am only a person doing a job. I have had multiple people hang up on me and be extremely rude to me. However, this throws me off. Rather than being polite, people get nasty and will be mad at me for the way things are happening in their lives. It never is my fault, and I never know what to say back.
The moral of this is, no matter what, don't be rude to people working in customer service. They are human just like you.
