When moving a short 5 hours away from Massachusetts I never realized there would be so many things that I would miss about my home state. As a true "Masshole" here are some things that I can't imagine MA without.
1. GOOD Dunks (Dunkin' Donuts):
The main thing that I miss from Massachusetts is 100% the Dunks. I miss that in MA you drive a Dunks every 2 minutes, which is essential for a coffee addict like me. Not to mention that they don't sell Styrofoam hot cups here, so you can get ice coffee all year round, I mean come on! I don't know what it is, but the Dunks in MA just tastes better.
2. Easy access to both the city and the beach:
Something unique about Massachusetts is that depending on where you are in the state you are able to be 15 minutes away from Boston, and also 15 minutes away from the nearest beach. It made for the best childhood experiences, and most amazing memories as a teenager with my best friends.
3. City of Champions: Loyal Massachusetts Sports Fans (Obnoxious in the best way possible)
Since I have been alive (2000), Boston sports teams have won 11 championships, and I don't know about you but I'd say that's pretty impressive. Our crazy, loyal fans can't help but make you feel proud for being from New England. Plus in Syracuse you can't just assume that everyone loves Tom Brady as much as you do, it's a true struggle
4. Every type of food that you can imagine
Something I really miss a lot is being able to go into Boston and get any type of food that I can imagine or crave. You can go to the North End and get a cannoli from Modern Pastry, bubble tea from TeaDo in Chinatown, and of course the BEST burrito you will ever eat from Felipe's in Harvard Square.
5. The T (the train)
The T in Boston, though known for being somewhat unreliable, is also extremely useful when you need to get into the city. I miss being able to get on the 'Orange Line' in my town and being in Boston in a matter of 15 minutes. The T holds a special place in the hearts of people that grew up in the Boston area because you would wait for the day that your mom would let you take the T by yourself.
6. Not being judged for your bad driving
In Massachusetts, we are known for our bad driving. I miss not being judged for the occasional questionable decision made while driving. If someone tells me that I am a bad driver I can just say that I am from Boston, and it all kind of clicks, and makes up for my INSANE road rage.
7. The slang (lack of the letter R)
I never really noticed that I would miss this until I came to Syracuse, but I really miss the way that people from MA talk. Yes, of course, the typical Boston accent, and saying wicked every other word (which I am guilty of doing). Words like barrel, cellar, parlor, supper, I had no idea no one else said them except for people from MA. Not to mention everyone else calls a rotary a roundabout or traffic circle, like what?
8. Just the people in general
Massachusetts is home to some of the most amazing and passionate people. Everyone that is from Boston says it proudly, and that is something that I really value. The people of MA in a way always look out for each other especially after a tragedy and that is something that I really miss being a part of.
9. Constantly surrounding by history
Massachusetts is home of many historical sites, growing up in MA I was able to have a strong passion for history because I was surrounded by it. I miss being able to walk around the city that people learn about in their middle school text book, and having such easy access to the location of such monumental historical events.
10. Distinct 4 seasons (you get the extremes of all types of weather)
Finally, something that I miss terribly about MA is that you get the best of all 4 seasons. Growing up this was the best thing because you were able to experience what each season truly felt like. My favorite season is fall which is MA's specialty, hence why I'm definitely missing the weather back home right now.
