The idea of eating with utensils is pretty simple: it's a means of transportation to move food from point A to B without the mess. Most households keep some sort of eating utensil stored in their cabinets somewhere. Humans have been using these tools since the dawn of civilization, eventually creating a rivalry between two different factions dating back several centuries—forks versus spoons.
Some of you out there must think that this a really trivial question. Well, yes it is. Regardless, people continue to use cutlery to facilitate the everyday process of eating a meal. We could very simply shovel food into our mouths like the barbarians that we are. But eating with a fork or spoon gives us a touch of class. There are even codes of etiquette devoted to table manners and handling silverware. So what is the better eating utensil? Are you on Team Fork or Team Spoon?
Starting on the right side of the plate are the spoons. The concave design makes it the best at scooping up food. A spoon is the very definition of elegance at the dining table. It gladly welcomes food of all colors and sizes onto its abode without complaint, all at the whim of its wielder. A spoon can carry any job at the table. It was made to serve, both literally and figuratively, thanks to its universal design.
Not only this, there are some foods that are “spoon-exclusive.” These VIPs include soups, liquids, and creams. If you were to pour yourself a bowl of cereal, what do you reach for? Naturally, you would go for the spoon first. Forks and liquids simply don't go together. Everything would slip between tines, just like your happiness.
Forks on the other hand are specialized forms of cutlery meant to spear food. Forks are practically the weapon of choice at the dinner table (besides knives) thanks to their lancing power. They are the tridents of strength, the embodiment of control and destruction. They are as majestic as they are intimidating. You can pierce, carve, and cut with forks. There is something so inherently satisfying about having a fork at your side.
You could argue that anything you can eat with a fork, you can also eat with your hands. But the whole point of silverware is so that you can eat without getting your hands messy. It would defeat the whole purpose if we were to throw our cutlery aside (though I will admit that eating with your hands can make eating some foods a lot faster). The fork introduces a whole new range of angles that you can hold your food with that a spoon can't. Life moves at a fast pace. Having food sit on the end of your spoon makes it more likely for it to fall off as you move about. Forks provide a sense of stability at the tips of your fingers. You don't have to worry about that block of cheese falling as you fly around the room, greeting and chatting along the way. The fork is the stalwart companion you need as you go about your foodie adventures.
What is your preferred choice of cutlery when you sit down at the dinner table? The dainty spoon or the fearsome fork? Or perhaps it could be the oddity that is the spork, or you may enjoy to use a nice pair of chopsticks instead. Whatever your decision, just remember to play nice in the kitchen.
