There are so many different places to eat on Campus, so it can be hard to find the perfect restaurant for you, especially with so many options for just one food group. Even craving something as simple as a sandwich, the most typical of American foods, there are 4 different restaurants to choose from. Today we're battling theses sandwich shops against each other to find out which sandwich shop is ultimately the best option for you.
Meet the ContestantsJimmy Johns: Jimmy Johns was founded in Illinois in 1983, In fact the headquarters is located in our very own Champaign, Illinois. In the 30 years since founding Jimmy Johns has expanded to over 2,000 locations nationwide. Jimmy Johns is known for yummy bread, free smells and “freaky fast delivery”. There are two on campus locations, and will deliver to dorms or academic buildings on campus until their closing time at 3 am. They’re typical sandwich is 8 inches and cost’s 4.79 and has simple ingredients. Sandwiches are made fresh, but are not very customizable. However they do offer a yummy looking vegetarian option with cheese and avocado, and have plain sandwich options for 3.95 for all the veggie hater out there. Subway: Subway is great if you want a simple sandwich with a little more customization. Sandwich is priced based on choice of meat and the standard sandwich is 6 or 12 inches long. Customers are allowed to choose from 5 choices of bread, cheese, and unlimited veggies and condiments. Subway also gives the option to toast sandwiches. The cost of subway is a bit pricier but if you get the daily sandwich deal, or the $5 foot long of the month then the price goes down a bit. Silvermine Subs: Silvermine subs is a great for someone who wants a good sandwich, but doesn't want the pressure of having to build it themselves. Customers have the option of having hot or cold sandwiches, and there is a small radius for delivery, but I wouldn’t count on it. They have three sizes and are a bit pricier then other shops, however they use more ingredients and make more complicated sandwiches. Which Which: I would consider Which Which the Mia Za’s of sandwich shops, there is something for literally any time of sandwich connoisseur, whether you’re looking for a favorite sandwich or a custom creation you can find it there. They even have Milkshakes and homemade chips. It’s the new sandwich shop on campus so the line is fairly longer than the other restaurants, so go for the experience, not speed of service. Which Which has a sandwich punch card which will get you a free sub after 10 punches, which in itself makes me want to go there more often. There are 3 different sizes to choose from and 10 different categories of sandwich. However it is on the pricier side (about $6 for a 7 in sandwich). Now that we've seen then competitors, it’s time for the Battle. There are 7 Categories and the shop which is ranked best in the most categories will become our champion!Customizability: Which Which The options of sandwich creation are literally unlimited. Price: Subway With all the daily deals and $5 foot longs you really get a lot of food on a college budget. Availability: Jimmy JohnsAlthough Jimmy Johns and Subway both have two locations JJ’s late night delivery service makes their sandwiches extremely accessible.
Taste: Silvermine Subs The tasty creations somehow defy expectations, I’ve yet to try a sandwich there that I didn’t like. Uniqueness: Tie between Which Which and Silvermine Subs.Although in my opinion Which Which has a More Unique sandwich experience, Silvermine Subs only has one location in Illinois, so you can really only get it here on campus.
Service:Jimmy JohnsOnly because they’re so damn fast. My sandwich is usually done being made before my receipt is printed.
Atmosphere: Which WhichThey have good branding and the whole experience of picking out you sandwich is pretty good.
And the winner is…. Which Which with three wins! Although we found a clear winner, when looking for a sandwich it really just depends on what you’re looking to get. Subway is good if you like veggies and want an 11 inch sandwich (lets be honest it’s not a whole foot long) but JJ is great if you looking for a plain turkey at 3am. Silvermine has wonderfully creative concoctions but Which Which has ultimate customization, and favorites that everyone loves. The only way to find out what sandwich shop is the best for you to try them all out for yourself.
