Thumbs Down For Martha

The movie that everyone has been waiting for didn’t receive the best reviews. Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice was given a score of 5 out of 10 by Rotten Tomatoe critics and a 3.7 out of 5 by its audience. At first, I was skeptical to watch the movie. Yet, I fed into the hype. But one thing was still very much unclear to me. Why Batman vs. Superman? Why not Superman vs. Captain America? Or Batman vs. Ironman? Batman is just a man, with bulging muscles, money, intellect, and fancy gadgets. He has no mutant powers, no super powers of any kind. This didn’t seem to be a fair, evenly matched fight-Superman will win hands down. No ifs-ands-or-buts about it. But I was wrong (what?). Yup. Batman almost manages to kill Superman (what!!!?...wait….how?) Exactly.

Batman manages to get his hands on some good old fashioned kryptonite. Bringing Superman to his knees and almost to his death. What saves him? Martha. Apparently, all that Batman and Superman needed to be instant besties was sharing that both their mothers are named Martha. This was the what-the-hell moment that viewers experienced which added to films negative reactions. And of course, viewers took to social media to poke fun at the heroes’ mommy moment. Let the never-ending, relentlessly funny, memes begin (insert evil laugh here) and I’ve seen plenty of good ones. And if this scene isn’t funny enough, Batman even says that he won’t let Martha die (again?) since he wasn’t able to save his mother when she was murdered in front of him. Filmmaker’s really milked the orphan angle out of Batman’s character which made him look pathetic and honestly annoyed the hell out of me. I’m still trying to figure out if Batman’s and Superman’s mothers actually always had the same name or if the film makers completely crapped this up.

Other than the whole mommy-dearest love between these two heroes, I enjoyed the film. I watched the movie in 3D. I think that actually watching the movie in 3D added to my overall. Positive experience. The movie had beautiful (cinematic) scenes. Many of which involved Superman and his cape flapping dramatically behind him. Which made him look like some sort of angelic god or something. Which I’m pretty sure was exactly what the director was going for.

On the other hand, Batman was depicted as a complete and total brolic badass, which was pretty cool to see.

Other scenes felt like I was watching a really cool video game. I found myself pretending to have my PS4 controller in hand. This was for most of the Batman scenes (isn’t that funny) especially in the Batman combat scenes.

The filmmaker’s also took the chance to introduce Wonder Woman who was played by actress Gal Gadot. Rumors have been going round (for like forever) that there will be a Wonder Woman movie coming out soon. Fans finally get to see Wonder Woman in all her glory as she teams up with Batman and Superman towards the end of the film. Equipped with a sword and shield, Wonder Woman seemed to resemble the goddess Athena.

Overall, I liked the film. I think it’s due to the fact that I watched it in 3D and I liked the cinematic scenes throughout the film which were beautiful to see in 3D. I doubt that I would have liked the film if I hadn’t watched it in 3D. As for the whole Martha’s-my-moms-name-too, I-won’t-kill-you-after-all thumbs down guys, thumbs down. But the memes that follow makes but all worth it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
