The #Basic Bro

A recent phenomenon has taken the U.S. by storm, and it is so basic.

The #Basic Bro

Let's define "basic" via Urban Dictionary for those who've been living under a rock:

  1. An adjective used to describe a person, place or activity involving obscenely obvious behavior, dress or action.
  2. Used to describe someone devoid of defining characteristics that might make a person interesting, extraordinary, or just simply worth devoting attention to.

Anything and everything girls seem to do these days is called out as being basic, and I mean everything. Whether it be drinking a cup of coffee, owning T-shirts 2 sizes larger than necessary, loving pumpkin flavored anything, having mad respect for a good monogram or wearing riding boots in the fall; the guidelines for falling into the basic betch category seem to be growing exponentially.

However people often seem to forget about the basic male population, and I think it's time we took a deeper look into what I like to call the basic bro:

  • Theme parties are his forte.
  • He's participated in #tbt at least five times.
  • His closet is packed full of sorority shirts and he wears them to class at least 4 days a week.
  • He has many basic female friends and always pokes fun at their basic-ness.
  • He secretly loves having basic female friends so he can tag along on their basic outings. *Disclaimer: he will pretend to dislike going on these outings.
  • Pretends to love hunting.
  • Owns (or plans to own) a large breed of dog, more specifically a lab or some type of spaniel.
  • Has "bro nights" with the guys, most likely involving poker, football and drinking heavily.
  • Has #mcm a drunken/embarrassing picture of one of his friends.
  • Owns either a Yeti, hand-painted cooler or personalized flask.
  • Owns Sperrys. Probably more than one pair.
  • Loves Whiskey-Cokes.
  • Has dressed up as one of the following for Halloween in recent years:

  • Owns Ray-Bans.
  • Owns croakies for his Ray-Bans.
  • Has gone to at least 2 music festivals.
  • Owns a bow tie.
  • Football is life.
  • Has shopped at Goodwill for party outfits.
  • His TV is turned to ESPN 69% of the time.
  • If he's reading this, he probably just laughed at "69%"
  • Owns 5+ button-down Polos.
  • He doesn't understand the concept of a clean house.
  • Has at least four Facebook or Instagram pictures of himself holding a fish he caught/an animal he shot.
  • Has a fantasy football team.
  • Bets on said fantasy football team.
  • Has used the same "first date plan" all four years of college.
  • Has a panoramic scenery shot on his Facebook/Insta of somewhere #artsy he's traveled, probably during his study abroad trip last summer. Betches love cultured guys.
  • Knows how to "frat snap."
  • And lastly, he possibly buys this brand of paper towels...

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
