The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution declares the right to bear arms. This right is taken away in certain circumstances, such as, if a person is a convicted felon. I believe that citizens should be able to protect themselves as the law permits, however, I believe that assault weapons should not be sold to the public under any circumstances.
When this Amendment was created, guns were not capable of mass destruction like they are today. As technology evolves, laws and enforcement should also be updated to ensure safety among the people. I support people arming themselves for defensive reasons, but I do not believe an assault weapon like the infamous AR-15 should be sold. Assault weapons are unnecessary for the purpose of protection. A simple handgun should be sufficient enough if you felt your life was in danger. A handgun is capable of severe damage, but nothing compared to what an assault weapon can do.
The number of mass shootings that occur in the United States is getting out of control. People should not be allowed to purchase several rounds of ammunition within a certain time period to keep people from committing mass killings. The United States leads the world in the amount of mass shootings per year. Some kind of change to the law needs to be made in order to make a difference.
Each week, the hearts of Americans are broken and are filled with sorrow because a loved one has passed due to the fact that a gun was in the hands of the wrong person. The government is unable to ensure that certain people cannot get their hands on a gun because there is always going to be a black market that allows them to purchase their weapon of mass destruction. However, if the government makes stronger regulations such as banning assault weapons it will make it harder for civilians to own them. There needs to be a change in the law in order to decrease the amount of mass shootings in the United States. If there is no change, mass shootings will continue to rise and dictate the course of our lives.
