In the first few days of school, not very much happens. I remember always taking a book with me to past the time. Books were always there for me when I didn't know anyone in any of my classes; and sometimes they'd even help me make new friends. I'd be reading and someone would comment, saying: "That's my favorite book! How are you liking it?" The books I'm going to recommend are all works of fiction; some of which you may have even heard of, but maybe you never really gave the book a chance to show you its true colors. Others you might not have heard of! To help you find something good to read this school year, here are my recommendations:
1) "Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment" By: James Patterson
I was first introduced to this series when I was in the seventh grade, and back then I hated reading. One of my teachers had us read this book as a class. I remember falling for this book by the end of the first chapter; the way it is written makes it addicting and incredibly hard to put down. The book is about a girl named Maximum Ride and her flock. Yes, I said flock; Max and her friends are kids with wings. They are running from the Erasers: some half human and half wolf creeps. It's action packed, and I honestly recommend the whole series. It is amazing. I'll end with Max's warning that can be found on the back of the paperback version:
"Do not put this book down. I'm dead serious. Your life could depend on it. I'm risking everything by telling you--but you need to know. -Max"
2) "Shatter Me" By: Tahereh Mafi
The first thing I noticed about Shatter Me was Tahereh's writing style; it is amazing and unique. The story is about a girl named Juliette whose touch is lethal. Her family abandons her and she ends up locked away in isolation for 264 days. One day, her world gets turned upside down. The Reestablishment, the people in charge of her isolation decided to give her company. The company is a young man and Juliette is terrified of him. I'm not going to spoil the fun of reading this adventure for yourself, so that's all I'm going to say. Here's a quote I'd like to share (there are so many good quotes, it was hard to decide on one):
" 'You can't touch me,' I whisper. I'm lying, is what I don't tell him. 'Please touch me,' is what I want to tell him. But things happen when people touch me. Strange things. Bad things. Dead things."
3) "Harken" By: Kaleb Nation
First of all: don't trust anyone. This is something you'd need to learn rather quickly in the Harken universe. The story follows a boy named Michael Asher a teenage boy, who is the target of an assassination. This is because, Michael learns, he is close to discovering a conspiracy. If you like conspiracy theories, reptile men, or even just the idea that we aren't really in control of anything that happens, then I recommend Harken! It's a quick read and a very enjoyable one, too. I am looking forward to the next book! Just a quick thing I need to mention: this book is hard to find! It was first released as an ebook, but now you can go to Barnes and Noble online and order a physical copy. I believe that is the only place where you can get a physical copy. The quote from this book that I'm going to shine the spotlight on is:
"Eyes of love are the hardest to find. Love is the emotion most-often faked."
Those are my three recommendations for books to read during the school year! Happy reading!
