August brings with it heat, bugs, and the return to school for a brand new year. This August I have for you a few things that will make your semester much more successful and enjoyable.

1. Go to class.

It seems simple, and it is, but sometimes motivation is lacking and you'll find any reason possible to skip your dreaded math class. Don't. It will benefit you in the long run next week when you have an exam.

2. Do your homework

Even if it isn’t graded, you should do it. It can only help you. Nobody has ever done worse on an exam because they did the homework. Of course you would rather watch Netflix, or literally anything else, probably, but do your homework first.

3. Study.

This seems obvious, but it’s so easy to become distracted, overwhelmed and unmotivated. Even when you don’t feel like it, commit to studying for every exam. You will survive it and you’ll be glad you did. Your grades will reflect all of your hard work.

4. Find something good in every day.

Even when you’re running late, spill your coffee, and trip running to class. Find something to be excited about every day, even if it’s something small.

5. Talk to new people.

Make new friends. Human communication is healthy. It’s good for you and you even make incredible, lifelong friends sometimes.

6. Stay organized.

Get a planner or some sort of way to track the assignments and other responsibilities you have. Write down anything and everything that you might not remember to do.

7. Invest in your health.

Trade your soda for a water and take the stairs instead of the elevator. I hate the stairs as much as the next person, but when you treat your body good, you start to feel good, this makes studying, going to class, and staying motivated easier.

8. Get involved in something.

Even if you’re taking a full class load and working, making time for fun will help keep you feeling good. Plus, being involved is a great way to build your resume.

9. Make the most out of your time.

Starting my senior year might be making me slightly more sentimental, but college will be over before you know it, so make sure you enjoy it. Every moment of it.

10. Document.

Whether it be photos, videos, a journal, etc. document the memories you’re making. One day you’ll want to look back and remember this time in your life. Don’t let it slip past you, document it, make the most out of right now.

College is such an incredibly fun time in our lives. Often we get caught up in the stress and become overwhelmed, but even in the midst of the whirlwind of college, the best advice I could ever give is to have fun and make it count.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
