Babysitting is definitely not the hardest summer job—there is from only watching kids for a short period of time during the day because of camps,to just being able to take them to the pool and lay out for a little bit, but there are still some highs and lows.
Six-year-olds are so much fun to be around; they tell you when they're hungry, they have amazing imaginations and they can take themselves to the bathroom. Six-year-olds are very independent.
When becoming a babysitter, I had no idea what would be in store for me. I thought about all of the bad things that could happen to the kids while I was supposed to be watching them and I was scared for their little lives. That's when the most amazing family stepped into my life. For the past two years, I've been a nanny to the smartest, most entertaining, best six-year-old there is.
While some kids enjoy watching cartoons all day, the little boy I babysit finds so much interest in watching The Weather Channel, ESP, and he does not complain when I want to watch HGTV. He can always tell me what the weather will be like or the rest of the week or what sports teams made it to a championship.
When we are not watching The Weather Channel, he is outside jumping on the trampoline or playing basketball or just throwing a blow up ball on the roof just to watch it fall down.
I mentioned I was a nanny. I take the little boy to and from camps over the summer. If I do not know where I'm going, he can tell me which streets to turn on and all the streets around it. Did I mention he likes to look at atlases of the the United States?
He knows way more than other six-year-olds I have been around. He may know too much for his own little good. Having just finished up kindergarten, he takes pride in being able to read which means I'll occasionally feel hovering while texting someone on my phone.
While this little boy is amazing in just about every way, he is still only six and tends to act like it. I'm so used to him listening to everything I say and everything I ask him to do. I sometimes forget that he is only six. Even in his six-year-old fits saying "You're the meanest one in the universe," or "This is my house so I'm the boss" or "I'm telling my mom and dad on you. I wish I could get my Mimi to pick me up after camp instead of you," we can usually get things pretty calm again.
Yes, he is sometimes a pain to be around but then again, he is only six. It has been nothing short of a blessing to be able to hang out with him. I love him and his family and I cannot thank them enough for everything they do for me.
