I'm sorry to every horror fan out there, but horror movies suck. At least to me they do. I find them boring, predictable, and have too many cliches. As with most other things, there are a few that I don't mind. Mostly because I like to laugh at them or they genuinely catch my attention.
Horror is a complicated genre that I feel is hard to accomplish. You need good actors, special effects, script, etc. If they all don't go well together, you're going to end up with a bad movie.
Here are a few of the reasons why I personally don't enjoy horror movies:
1. They're Boring
The trailers really only show the highlights of the movie. In the end, there's a lot of nothing. People being quiet, screaming, or any other stupid filler is happening. I recently watched the movie Hush. The guy just wanders around trying to find a way in. It's really only the last few minutes that anything good is happening. There's just always too many filler scenes.
2. Jump Scares
Jump Scares are the most cliche things a horror movie can do. I don't want a small rush of adrenaline. I want the suspense to build. I want to continuously be scared. I don't want a quick fright because a bird sudden flies by or someone is suddenly standing there. Referring back to Hush, it relies on trying to jump scare you. Constantly giving those slow camera movements and you're waiting for something to jump you. I'm more focused on waiting for that jump scare instead of paying attention to the movie.
3. Predictable
Every horror movie has the same general idea, so you sort of know what's coming. They just create a certain vibe when something is going to happen. Things get super quiet, weird noises start happening, etc. This is the main reason some people won't watch horror movies with me, because I sit there criticizing everything and predicting the entire movie.
4. Marketing
I get it, trailers are made to show you some of the best parts so that it catches your attention to make you want to see it. However, when it comes to horror movies, I feel the trailers mislead you. Once again, talking about Hush, I just thought there would be a bit more action. I thought it was going to be more intense than it was going to be. It turned out to be rather boring and nothing what I was picturing based on the trailer.
I could probably go on and on, but it's just going to turn into a rant. I know there are a few good ones out there, but generally most of them are just awful. If you're going to make me watch a horror film with you, be prepared for a lot of talking.
I don't mind them if they have some humor and know they're kind of bad. For example, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Hilarious. I don't know that it's necessarily a horror movie, but the idea of it is. I highly recommend watching it if you like humor/horror mixed together.
Sorry to any horror fans out there that disagree with me. If you want, feel free to leave me a few reccomendations for movies you think might change my mind.
