When you think of Auburn you think of football, or at least I do.
After getting accepted, I would daydream in class about how fun game days were going to be. I was not let down, but they are nothing like I imagined they would be. Not being from the south and most people I know staying up north attending Big 10 schools, I thought it was going to be like what I saw from the Instagram posts.
But I was very, very wrong. Not in a bad way, of course, change is great! I was just not expecting the full intensity of a full-on South East Conference football game.
First of all, I had no idea that gameday dates were a thing, when I told my friends at home about this they're response was a flood of question marks. I think it's a cute tradition though, very old-school and charming, it's just something that I had no idea was a thing.
There's also the whole 'dressing up' part that also threw me for a loop as well. I thought I would wear the cut up shirts and cheerleader skirts, or the crazy-printed leggings.
Luckily I learned how to walk in wedges for long periods of time during rush, but I still found myself scrambling to buy appropriate game day attire.
The thing that I really wasn't expecting was how literally the world stops on gameday. Do not try to order any food or go for breakfast on a Saturday morning in Auburn because it will not be successful. Most places are closed for the game and the traffic is worse than any major highway during rush hour.
Also the fact that "The Tailgate Guys" start setting up tents on every corner of campus on Wednesday is something I have never anything like before in my life. If my demeanor sounds negative, it's not at all! This is something that hit me like a bucket of ice water, but also something that I absolutely fell in love with.
There's nothing like an Auburn home game.
I relentlessly beg my friends to come so they can see all the amazing craziness for themselves because honestly, I don't think they believe me when I tell them about my weekend. Especially after that big win over Georgia, then conquering Alabama in the Iron Bowl was something out of an episode on Friday Night Lights on steroids.
A wise man once said, "If you ain't first, you probably just played Auburn," the proof is in the rankings. War Eagle!
