Attraction Or Deception?

Why looks should mean nothing but inevitably mean everything.

Attraction Or Deception?

See a Calvin Klein model and find yourself drooling and deeming that your future husband, at least in your dreams. (he's hot who cares)

See an overweight person and don't give a second glance or maybe even make a sny remark about how that will be you soon if you keep having those fries. (he's fat who cares)

I used these scenarios to prove my point, yet all too often this is what it comes down to.

If you don't believe me, take a look at my cover photo. This was an attractive women who put on a fat suit to go on dates as a social experiment, the outcome not pretty. Some men were confused while others just appalled and rude. One man suddenly exclaimed he was married and another said he had to use the bathroom, never to return.

It is actually absolutely insane to consider how large of a role looks play into every day life. The worst part is, most features are out of our control. You can blame heredity and genes. But who is to blame for the shallow world we now live in where an ugly or larger person doesn't get the time of day. Not only in the dating scene but the work world as well.

Studies have been done to show that attractive males and females are more likely to score a job after an interview even when they performed more poorly than the less fortunate looking individual. So you hire the person you and the rest of society would rather look at rather than the person with more intellect and skill. Absolute insanity. While, some of us may be victims to this deception, we also find ourselves acting in the same manner. Sad but true.

Attraction means so much when in reality it means so little. Who a person is is on the inside. Their personality, their values, their family are all acceptable things to judge someone on, but looks……. Yet this is how it goes.

Attraction is undeniably more than skin deep, but often we get stuck on the exterior to even get to know the interior and the part that really matters. Think about it, we all do it.

You're soulmate could be a 300 pound man or woman but you would never know that because you probably wouldn't be caught talking to them. Even if you get to know them and the physical attraction isn't there it will end at that. And this is because physical attraction plays such a GINORMOUS role in society. Then you delve deeper into it and it seems somehow even more ridiculous.

What makes us girls be attracted to bumps on the side of your arms (muscles). And what makes the fellas want to see big boobs and butt, which is really just excess fat. It honestly makes no sense at all, but it is how the world works and I do not see it changing anytime soon in fact it has only gotten worse.

Girls starve themselves to try to look like that picturesque model in the magazines. Honey, let me tell you they have amazing genes that honestly personally could never be achieved even living in the gym and off of salad. But that image that is praised is what we want to appear like. A few decades back the thicker girl was in. Tyra Banks, was a thick women deemed sexy prior to it turning to victoria secret angels who look like they've never eaten a burger in their entire lives.

The thicker women is coming back into style as people realize it is nearly impossible to look like the high fashion models and honestly in no way worth it to be skeletal and live off of greens. But I digress

My point is, why do looks mean so much and weigh so heavily on our thoughts and actions when they mean so little.

The greatest person in the world could be huge and the most attractive person could be cruella deville. How did society cast such an engrained mindset in all of us that does not let us stray from this mindset.

While I do not have the answer, I do know it casts this evil shallow cloud upon all of us in one way or another. Whether it be denying a date from the nice guy that you feel no spark when you look at or wearing a one piece because your body is not acceptable according to the magazines, it haunts us all.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
