It is time to take a stand against overused Instagram captions. Scrolling through any teenager's Instagram or Facebook feed, it is impossible to escape these clichéd phrases. Here are ten sayings that we should all make an extra effort to clear from our vocabularies.
1. "Low quality pic with a high quality friend."
This was cute and clever the first time it was used.
2. **Insert witty caption about [whatever relates to the picture] here**
This is also a favorite Facebook album title. ("[Insert clever title about junior year here.]")
3. "Personality pic" or "Definition of our relationship."
I'm sorry, but you making a silly face does not define your personality, and neither does you and your boyfriend making conflicting faces at each other.
4. "No new friends."
You actually probably do make new friends sometimes.
5. "Happy birthday to my best friend in the whole world...**paragraph**"
This is nice, but you can't deny that it is overdone. A birthday message for one person does not need to be broadcast on the internet for all to see. It is also unnecessary when people post birthday, Mother's Day, and Father's Day pictures for parents who do not even use Instagram.
6. Song lyrics, i.e. "Hey, what's up? Hello," or anything Taylor Swift.
I am not one to talk, considering I sat in the grass in front of the Eiffel Tower a few weeks ago with the sole purpose of quoting "Our Last Summer" from Mamma Mia!
7. "#tbt to when..." or "take me back."
This is overused on Instagram because it is an excuse to show how cute you were as a baby, and you can only do it once a week because it is "throwback thursday," so there is a sense of urgency to not miss a week. There is also the ever so popular #mcm ("man crush monday") and #wcw ("woman crush wednesday").
8. "I like you a LITTLE," or, "She's kind of a BIG deal."
These captions, and other variations of them, are reserved for pictures with your sorority little sister or big sister. Teenagers also love using puns whenever they can think of one.
9. "Here's to the nights we won't remember with the people we'll never forget."
Come on.
10. "Dysfunctional"
This word is used in a variety of sentences that highlight how weird, crazy, and fun you and your friends are.
Spread the word. Help eradicate basic Instagram captions everywhere.
