Arizona State University is constantly advancing itself by allowing a variety of unique, student-led groups and clubs to thrive on campus, and has always encouraged members of every ethnic, political, and socioeconomic group to get involved somehow.
Members of the LGBTQIA+ community have many options when it comes to joining groups on campus that devote their attention to issues that affect them personally.
There are more than 19 LGBTQIA+ organizations on campus, and more than 1000 students are active members of these organizations, according to online statistics.
Not only are these organizations found in Tempe on the main campus, but also on the Downtown Phoenix, West, and Polytechnic Campuses at ASU, making them accessible for a majority of people.
Like any other group or club developed on campus, members can find support and the opportunity to confide in one another, as well as the chance to develop life-long friendships.
The Rainbow Coalition is an umbrella organization (organization that overlooks many other organizations) at Arizona State University to the LGBTQIA+ organizations that involve those in the ASU community.
The organization directs LGBTQIA+ students to additional clubs or groups on and off-campus that they may feel will better satisfy their desires or requirements.
The Rainbow Coalitions goals include: improving campus climate for its members, connecting to one another in a positive setting, and advocating for LGBTQIA+ individuals at ASU.
Many students who take part in the Rainbow Coalition are equally involved in an organization called VOX, which stands for “Voices for Planned Parenthood.”
ASU junior Tyler Maynard, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, said being in a club that is gender-inclusive has made a positive impact in his life.
“It’s a place where you don’t have to think twice because you aren’t held by a certain traditional standard,” Maynard said.
Maynard said VOX helps to teach members important lessons regarding comprehensive sex-education, abstinence, and LGBTQIA+ events on campus.
“A lot of things were brought to my attention from Rainbow Coalition to VOX that would’ve never crossed my mind had I not been involved in the club,” Maynard said.
Sean Boudreau, a sophomore at ASU, recognizes the constant growing acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ members.
“I don’t think anyone should put anyone else down for who they are. I like that groups are provided for those in the community and other unique communities, as well,” Boudreau said.
Being neutral about the LGBTQIA+ topic has its benefits because it isn’t ever overwhelming deciding to advocate or neglect equal opportunity to the members of the community.
Carley Russell, a junior at ASU, said she was impressed by the numerous organizations offered to LGBTQIA+ students and thinks it’s important to encourage students to join clubs that are inclusive.
“I definitely like that opportunities are provided to members of the LGBTQIA+ community,” Russell said. “It’s important that everyone knows they have a place and being part of a club can definitely help.”
