Blending hip hop, soul, and indie rock, The Lonely Biscuits have carved their own niche in the world of music. From their debut as Gravy and the Biscuits, until preparing for their first full-length album, the Biscuits have toured from New York to San Francisco, and released multiple EPs along the way. Since first discovering this band in 2013, I have avidly followed their career, and can't wait to see where their journey takes them.
Let's meet the band. On lead vocals, and lead guitar, Grady Wenrich fronts The Lonely Biscuits, and is the main lyricist. On bass, is Nick Byrd who lays the foundation for the band, with Sam Gidley playing drums. Based out of Nashville, Tennessee, the group recently went through a lineup change, in which John Paterini left his role of vocalist and guitarist to pursue a different creative direction.
Formed in 2011, Wenrich and Gidley first met while they were freshman year roommates at Belmont University, in Nashville. Down the hall from them, lived Paterini, who soon joined the pair after hearing music they had been playing. The three released "Butter" on Youtube, which quickly rounded up a lot of views, as well as their first EP "Soul Food". Nick Byrd then joined, and the group became The Lonely Biscuits. Soon after, the band released one of their most popular tracks "Chasin' Echoes" which increased the band's exposure and popularity. In 2013, the group was nominated for, and received the first MTVu College Artist Woodie. Following the award, "A Girl Named Destiny" EP was released. In 2014, "Things Sure Have Changed" EP was also released; this being the last EP to feature Paterini's influence. After touring in the summer of 2015, John Paterini departed from the band to continue his education, and partake in other creative areas.
In concert, the band is strong. Their shows are comprised of jam sessions, covers, and a well-crafted setlist of their own songs. On stage, the group has great chemistry with each other, as well as with the audience, creating a pleasant, and enjoyable experience for everyone. I've only seen them live once, to date, and I've since made it a goal to see the band whenever they're in a nearby city.
Looking forward, the band is currently touring the United States, and plan to release their first full-length album, "The Universe In You", in 2017. So far, only one single, "Talk About", has been released; an upbeat love song with a catchy melody, and punchy instrumental section. Fortunately for me, I have tickets to see the band on the road this summer, and can't wait to hear how they've grown in the last two years. Should you be new to The Lonely Biscuits, I would suggest "Chasin' Echoes", "Pool Day", "Talk About", and "Come Around." Those songs span across their career, and will give you a feel of the band's sound. Be on the lookout for this group, because I wholeheartedly believe they're destined for greatness.
