Arkansas' Spotlight Writer of the Week: Emily Lucht

Let me tell you, this girl started writing for The Odyssey at Arkansas late in the game this semester, but she has been THE BEST to work with.

She always has a positive attitude and always anxious to submit a new article every week. She makes my job easy, so that makes her Spotlight Writer of the Week.

Enjoy getting to know a little bit about Miss Emily Lucht...

What chapter are you affiliated with?

Alpha Chi Omega

Where are you from?

Colleyville, Texas (a suburb of Dallas)

What are your hobbies?

Writing, binge watching Netflix, and eating Bliss cupcakes

Why did you choose Arkansas for school?

I chose Arkansas because it was beautiful, not too far from home, and had a great program for what I wanted to study. Also, I love college sports and Arkansas had the best school spirit of any school I had considered.

What is your favorite part about Greek Life?

The friends/connections you make through the years and the t shirts :)

When did you realize you had a passion for writing?

I have always loved writing. I have kept a journal since I was in middle school and I try to write in it whenever I get the chance. I really discovered my passion my sophomore year of high school when I took a creative writing class for a semester. I fell in love with writing stories and decided that I always wanted it to be a part of my life.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

It's a tie between LA and London, England. I have visited both of these places and would give anything to go back. I loved everything about both of them. I felt very at home when I visited. In California, I loved the weather and the beach and just the atmosphere. In London, I loved the architecture and the culture (and the accents).

Describe your perfect date

My perfect date would honestly be something not out of the ordinary, like bowling or laser tag or a walk in the park talking and getting to know the guy. Also, I am always down for movie dates.

Describe your perfect man

My perfect man first and foremost loves God. A Godly man is something I have always strived to find. I also like a man who can make me laugh, will appreciate the little things, and has pretty eyes. I like a man who isn't afraid to let me be myself and appreciates even the darkest parts of me. He also has to be able to put up with my movie and TV obsession (especially Friends, How I Met Your Mother, and Grey's Anatomy).

Tell us what your most embarrassing moment has been

I have always been terrified of heights my entire life. When I was in elementary and middle school (my school was kindergarten through 8th grade) we always did a panoramic picture of the entire school atop these metal bleachers. Every year, you moved further up the bleachers. Well, for a kid who has always been short and is terrified of heights, the middle of the bleachers seemed super high up for me. I tried to get out of it, but they wouldn't let me. When it was time to come down from the bleachers, I was so terrified I couldn't move. A bunch of kids made fun of me and my grandmother (who was a teacher at the school at the time) pulled my entire 5th grade class aside and gave them all a lecture about how I was "special" and did not deserve to be made fun of (which made them make fun of me even more).

How do you feel about the "50 Shades of Grey" phenomenon? Did you read the books and watch the movie?

I did not read the books or watch the movie. I thought about it just to see what it was all about, but I decided that it wasn't worth the time and the reviews of the book/movie were way more fun to read anyway (they're hilarious you should check them out).

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
