Are you ready?

7 Things You Need To Know Before Starting Recruitment

Recruitment is just around the corner, and while every school's recruitment is different, they all have some things in common. Just the idea of recruitment can lead to excess stress, but don't worry! If you are nervous or unsure if you're ready for recruitment, read the list below, and hopefully the week is a little less chaotic.

1. Water. Water. Water.

You are talking a lot. It is blistering hot outside. You need to drink water... and way more than you think you should. Recruitment is a stressful time and the last thing you need to worry about is being dehydrated. Every time you eat substitute your soda for water, carry a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day, and remember that even if you think you don't need to drink more water... you do!

2. Mints

After you go to your first house you realize just how loud you have to talk to the girls. Everyone is screaming in each other's faces and the last thing you want to be worried about is bad breath. Pop a mint in your mouth before you enter the house.

3. Flip Flops/Flats

While the first few rounds of recruitment are more causal and comfy sandals are okay to wear, that's not the case in the later sets. Walking (or running) around from house to house is hard, especially when you're in wedges/heels. Once you leave a house, take off your heels and slip on comfy shoes to walk to your next destination. You won't be the only girl doing this, and your feet will thank you!

4. Preparation is Key

You've spent all summer trying to find the perfect outfit for each day of recruitment. With early meeting times and little sleep, it's imperative that you are prepared. Lay your outfit out the night before and get your bag of essentials together. That way you don't have to worry about finding the shoes you are supposed to wear that day or search for anything else that might be missing.

5. Coffee Filters

You may not want to carry around a bag full of makeup, but coffee filters are a great way to soak up excess oil that appears on your skin throughout the day.

6. Singing

One of the most surprising aspects of recruitment is the singing you hear as you visit each house. Every chapter has their own little songs to welcome you and having a bunch of extremely happy girls sing at the top of their lungs can be overwhelming if you're not ready for it.

7. Recommended Items

As I said in the beginning, every school's recruitment is a little different. Usually the school you are attending will send you a letter explaining what to expect, what you should wear, items you need to bring, etc. Make sure to look over this list!

Enjoy recruitment. As stressful as it is, it is also a wonderful experience!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
