Before I had even heard of Arcade Fire, Pink Floyd was one of my favorite bands, if not my absolute favorite. Whenever my parents would leave the house and it would be just me, I would use the biggest speaker in my house and blast Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here. I may not be the biggest fan, meaning I have yet to listen to all of their albums and songs, but while growing up they definitely had a special place in my heart.
I was first introduced to Arcade Fire through my friends in high school and I didn't necessarily like them at first. Not that I had anything against them, but at the time I was more focused on '60s/'70s music. It wasn't until later I understood the power of Arcade Fire's lyrics, music, and purpose, and it was then when a lot about them reminded me of Pink Floyd.
Now don't get me wrong. Pink Floyd will always be one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Their music is timeless and memorable. No band can ever replace them. However, moving into modern times, and some would say post modern, music has evolved and transformed to fit the vibe of its subjective decade. Arcade Fire is a 21st-century band that provides meaningful music to all of its listeners and has managed to wow listeners throughout two decades.
This year's Lolla lineup is crazy awesome. From Chance the Rapper to The XX and Lorde, Lolla has put a lot of money into hiring exceptional artists this year. Last year, Lolla closed out its festival with its headliner, LCD Soundsystem, at its biggest stage, throwing a giant disco party as its last hoorah for the season. This year, in that same headlining slot, Arcade Fire will rock the crowd with its enticing music. Needless to say, I think Lollapalooza designed this lineup to put the most iconic artists last on the list, so listeners walk away with the most thrilling show.
Regardless of industry level, music magazine, and critic critiques, Arcade Fire has a unique sound that matches the times, just how Pink Floyd thrived in theirs. I believe Arcade Fire's music will live longer than them, maybe even becoming timeless like Pink Floyd. All in all, Arcade Fire is a phenomenal group of singers, songwriters, and musicians and it's almost impossible to not compare them to Pink Floyd.
