Looking around a crowded room today you see everyone looking down on the small screen in front of them. As I noticed this a few times I started to realize how much we miss. We miss the face-to-face conversations that are so necessary for life. We miss the actual laughing, not just the LOLs we send by texts. We miss quality time.
This is just in a crowded room, the same happens when we are in the hallway at school. We miss the simple smile someone is giving to us. We often miss what is around us, running into others most times.
The thing that makes me the saddest is when we are outside in God’s creation and we miss what is around us. There is so much beauty and wonder in the world. When you are walking outside in the spring and summer, admire the beauty of the flowers instead of looking on Instagram. When it is fall take a minute to smell the air and hear the crunching of the leaves beneath your feet instead of texting the person right back. When it is winter walk through the snow and look at the intricate and unique design of each snowflake instead of accidentally running into someone because you had your head down looking at your phone.
One of my favorite things to do is to look at the stars. I can’t even begin to explain the awe and excitement I get on a starry night. It’s one of the simplest things to do to take the time to just look up, but when you do it causes a much bigger reaction and appreciation of our wonderful creator.
This is why I believe we have to appreciate and find the beauty in the small things. The Lord purposely places little things throughout the day to make us smile, we often are just too busy to even realize it. The Lord loves to let us enjoy Him and it is often not through the big things, that are amazing as well but it is through the small things that occur more often.
Those little gestures that someone does for you, like holding the door or just asking genuinely how you are doing mean the world. Watching the sunset or admiring the sky that is a pink and purplish color. The smell of a Thanksgiving dinner. The conversation you had with a friend you happen to run into at the mall. That is what I am talking about, the simple things.
Take the time at the end of the day and reflect, you notice all the different things that God placed in your way to let you enjoy Him and His creation. Appreciate the small things and also take the opportunity to do the small thing that might just make someone else’s day. It doesn’t have to be this big grand gesture. Beauty and wonder are often found in the details. So let’s take the opportunity to enjoy each others presence and God’s handiwork.
