About a week ago, I published an article about the new "Ghostbusters" movie, which you can read here, and I still stand by what I said about the movie in the article. Although, I don’t really like the way I worded a few things, and I’d like to apologize for that. The article was written with a lot of passion about the issue, and I think some of that clouded what I was saying.
I do believe that the movie is a step forward for white women. It’s so great to see three smart, funny, women scientists taking on ghosts in New York. Then, there is also Leslie Jones' role in the film. This is nothing against Leslie Jones as a person or actress, but it’s about the stereotype of her character in the film. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon all play scientists -- smart, funny women scientists -- and they are also all white. Leslie Jones’ character plays basically a street smart minority. If you did not know, Leslie Jones is black.
I understand that Jones did agree to play the character and even tweeted, “Why can’t a regular person be a Ghostbuster,” in reaction to critics slamming the character as a stereotype, as well as, “It's not a man, woman, race, class thang!! Its a ghostbuster thang!!"
I am white so I’m not sure what my opinion on this should be, and I don’t want to say one thing or another because it’s really not my place. I just wanted to apologize for my subheading about “if you believe in equality” nonsense as that could be taken as insensitive to this particular issue and that was not my intent. I honestly don't know what the opinion on this is suppose to be. I don't want to cause people to get all up in arms about it because it might not even be that big of a deal. I also don't want people to look at Jones' tweets and think, "Oh yes, it's OK to cast minorities in stereotypical roles," because it's not.
I still think the movie looks great, and I’m still planning on seeing it. I still believe it is a step in the right direction for women, but I want to emphasize that being a feminist is not just being a feminist for white women, it’s for all women. It’s about everyone gaining equality. So again, I would like to apologize for my choice of words on the title of my article.
