DePaul University, named after St. Vincent de Paul offers students the chance to learn more about the universities namesake. St. Vincent de Paul has a rich history and is the patron saint of charity. One of the ways the university allows students to explore deeper into the Vincentian mission of social justice and dignity for all is with the Vincentian Heritage tour. This tour allows students over spring break the chance to visit Paris where Vincent did all of his work and to other parts of France such as Folleville where Vincent had his turning point. I had to apply to participate in the tour, and so far it is something I do not regret. After finding out I was admitted at the end of October, I was very excited and could not wait for the experience of a life time to visit France and be in the footsteps where Vincent de Paul did his work.
This trip is a student leadership to try and connect the wisdom of Vincent to the leadership roles students are in, accompanying me are staff from Mission and Ministry of DePaul and 17 other student leaders. Before leaving on the trip over spring break, there are many steps and things that must be done before departing. To start off, me and the student participants are enrolled in a religious course talking about the history and life of St. Vincent de Paul. That way, we can have an understanding of his life and to know the background information as well as why Vincent helped out the poor. Other tasks we have to complete are event planning. One commitment to the trip is having the chance to share what we learn on the trip by hosting an event related to the Vincentian wisdom. Other logistical aspects include creating community by going to a few events related to why we applied for this tour and getting to know students outside of the classroom as well as a dinner for past and current Vincentian Heritage tour participants.
Reflecting upon this trip I will be taking, I am excited because I have never been overseas, and I love DePaul University. What better way to show my love by having the chance to learn more about Vincent and share to others all about him. So far, the community we are building is essential in order to prepare for the trip, and I am currently asking the Vincentian question of what must be done, a question DePaul students hear many times.
