Anime films usually never talked about in otaku circles. Series, yes. Films themselves, no. So I decided to dedicate this listicle to my favorite anime films. Please note I am only using ONE Hayao Miyazaki film. I may make another list just dedicated to his works only.
1. "Akira"
Largely considered by most critics to be one of the greatest animated films of all time, Akira is a cyberpunk post apocalyptic political thriller set in post World War III "Neo-Tokyo." After discovering an escaped experiment during a brawl, a bosozoku gang uncover a conspiracy that may end up destroying all of Neo-Tokyo. As a mature work, Akira contains gruesome violence and an attempted rape scene. Best left for an adult audience.
2. "Summer Wars"
This critically acclaimed Madhouse production follows Kenji Koiso, a math whiz and moderator in the massive virtual reality world OZ, as he attempts to save OZ (and the whole physical world) from a malevolent artificial intelligence dubbed Love Machine. This work contains a scene of nudity and some violence (despite the climax of the film involving a traditional card game), so viewer discretion is advised.
3. "Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shambala"
This is a film based off the popular series Fullmetal Alchemist. Two years after Edward Elric regains his arm and leg, he is dragged from his home world by the Gate of Alchemy to our Earth (Germany, specifically) in the year 1923. From Earth, Edward adapts and lives without to the use Alchemy, studying to find a way back to his home world. During Edward's time on Earth, Adolf Hitler (yes, THAT Adolf Hitler) makes an alliance with the Thule Society, a mysterious group that uses Alchemy. Now since this is in the same vein as the show, this film contains a considerable amount of violence. In that case, viewer discretion is advised.
4. "Spirited Away"
This was the Hayao Miyazaki work that I've referenced earlier in this article. A winner of 33 film awards, Spirited Away is Japan's highest grossing film with 30.4 billion yen in box office sales. The film is about Chichiro, a young girl who accidentally enters the spirit realm while moving with her family. Her parents are turned into pigs and she herself becomes a servant in a bath house. From there, Chichiro struggles to work at the bath house and save her parents and escape the spirit realm. This film contains violence and some sexual references.
