When my boyfriend first asked me to see this with him a couple of months back, I couldn't have been any less interested. But after weeks of insisting that I would like it if I just tried it, he broke me down and got me to say yes to the Star Wars. To prep for the new movie, I watched the three movies before this new one over the course of a week or so, which wasn't as bad as it sounds. I watched one movie every couple days and, much to my surprise, ended up liking them. I'm not much of a Sci-Fi person, but I liked the characters and was intrigued by the ongoing storylines. So, Friday the 18th, we went to see a matinee showing of The Force Awakens.
One thing I really thought was interesting was the Star Wars signature opening with the words going up the screen. I like this because first of all, it's kinda awesome, and second, it gives you some good footing to start the movie with.
So, I'll be honest, I was really worried about not liking the new characters as much as I like the classic characters. However, I was proved wrong once again. I loved how strong and independent Rey was, and I liked that Finn finally came clean, I think it spoke to his character well. I wasn't totally thrilled with the choice for Kylo Ren, but even though I don't love him as an actor, I think Adam Driver did a pretty good job at carrying out his character strongly.
As for the "classic" characters, (Han, Luke, Leia, C3PO, R2 and Chewy) I was a little bummed out that we didn't see them that much. I really wish we had more screen time with C3PO and R2, but I absolutely love BB-8, so I guess I can't complain that much. However, I was pretty disappointed with the lack of Luke. I understand that he has run away and he was being very mysterious, but even when we did find him, he didn't even say one thing! He could have at least said like, "hey what's up?" or anything at all to assure us that he wasn't just a Luke hologram or something.
Now, I feel like I can't do this article justice without talking about the giant elephant in the metaphorical room. Han. I'm so torn. I understand that Harrison Ford is getting old and, let's be honest even if it is a little morbid, you just never know how long someone has left, especially at his age. I was so thrilled that he came back for this movie, but did he really have to die? Couldn't we just pretend that he's immortal and never has to die? On the other hand, I do understand that that was probably the best and most reasonable way for him to go. But still, it's sad. However, I'm very happy that Rey went with Chewy because I just know they're going to be best friends now.
So, overall, I was impressed. It was entertaining and interesting, but I'm still not so sure about a Star Wars without a Han. I probably will end up seeing the next one because I think I'm in too deep not to. I give The Force Awakens 4.5 out of 5 lightsabers.
