An Open Letter To The People Who Label Me

“People are gonna label you. It’s how you overcome those labels, that’s what matters.”- Chase Adams

To the people who label me,

“Blonde” “Upper Class” “Girl” “White” “Goody Two Shoes”

These are just some of the words I’ve been labeled with over the years. You just take one look at me and this is what you assume. Well, let me tell you something there is more to me than what you see on the outside or what you get from our first meeting. I’m not going to say that I’m not any of these things on the outside, but they don’t define who I am as a person.

“Blonde”

Yes, the color of my hair is blonde, but that does not mean I am dumb or ditzy or easy. Most people assume those things right away from the way blondes are portrayed. Those are not true though. I am not dumb, ditzy, or easy. I am smart, serious (sometimes), and strong. Yeah I have my moments when I can be ditzy or dumb, but that is not due to my hair color, it is just me being forgetful. Just because my hair is a certain color as others does not mean I am the same as them.

“Upper Class”

I am a part of the upper class, but that does not make me snobby or mean that I can have whatever I want. I am more of a down to earth person who would rather give money to help others than buy new things for myself. I do not get everything handed to me like everyone assumes. I was not one someone who was born into the upper class life. My family worked their butts off to get there. Just because I am part of this upper class does not mean I don’t work as hard or have not faced difficult obstacles in life like everyone else.

“Girl”

Yes, I am a girl, but that does not mean I am incapable of doing certain things. I can do anything a guy could do just as well.

“White”

The color of my skin is white. To others that may mean that I have certain privileges over other races, but to me that does not matter. We shouldn’t make assumptions based on other people’s skin color. They have had their own hardships and difficulties. Also, just because some people of a race acts a certain way does not mean everyone of that race acts like that way.

“Goody Two Shoes”

Yes, I follow the rules and do what I am supposed to do, but that does not mean I am uptight all the time or lack a sense of adventure. I am respectable and I do follow the rules, but I am not uptight about it or force other to be like that. I do have an adventurous side to me and there are other times I do break the rules. You would not be able to tell that from one interaction though. I am friendly and enjoy having a good time.

These labels are not who I am. They are what you choose to define me by. I am a caring, smart, adventurous, kind, and friendly person. I do not let these labels define me. If this is how you see me then I’m sorry you choose to see me this way. There is more to me than my labels, so please get to know me.

Love,

The girl you label

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
